Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let us start with a question which is just about relevant to the show's title character. In medicine, what is a "buffy coat"?

Answer: Coagulated blood plasma

Blood, vampires - in fact, there's quite a close link there, don't you think?
2. Willow Rosenberg is another character in the show. But in which of Shakespeare's plays does one of the characters sing the "Willow Song"?

Answer: Othello

The poignant "Willow Song" is sung by Desdemona in Act 4, scene 3, shortly before her murder by Othello.
3. A character who appeared from time to time is The Judge. Which comedian had a novelty hit record in 1968 with "Here Comes The Judge"?

Answer: Dewey "Pigmeat" Markham

The title was based on his catchphrase, which was also used in "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In". Markham (1904-81) was an American comedian who began his career in travelling shows and burlesque and later appeared frequently on US television's "Ed Sullivan Show".
4. There is also a "popular" character called Spike. Stretching the "name" link a little, which famous cartoon character owns Marlinspike Hall?

Answer: Captain Haddock

Captain Haddock, of course, appears in the "Tintin" series of cartoon books and films. In sailing terms, a marlinspike is a pointy piece of wood used to separate the strands of a rope when splicing it.
5. Someone called The Master also appears from time to time, who seems to be a bit of a bad guy. Which UK children's science-fiction TV series also had a villain called The Master, long before Buffy hit our screens?

Answer: Doctor Who

For those who are too young to remember "Doctor Who" (which probably includes most fans of Buffy), The Master was a renegade Time Lord who popped up from time to time as one of the Doctor's regular enemies. Originally played by Roger Delgado in the early 1970s, he has now been impersonated by almost as many different actors as the Doctor himself.
6. Rupert Giles is Buffy's "Watcher". Although I believe he's one of the good guys, he's not a saint in the true sense of the word. Of whom is Saint Giles the patron saint?

Answer: Beggars and cripples

Saint Giles was a hermit who lived in the late seventh and early eighth centuries, and his Saint's Day is September the First. He is also patron saint of rams, blacksmiths and breast-feeding (well, I suppose somebody has to be...).
7. Daniel Osbourne, known as Oz, is a werewolf. Who wrote the famous children's book "The Wizard of Oz"?

Answer: L Frank Baum

L Frank Baum wrote more than a dozen books about the land of Oz between 1900 and his death in 1919. After his death, other writers such as Ruth Plumly Thompson continued to churn out further sequels on a more or less annual basis up until the 1940s, when the flow began to slow down somewhat. I don't think there are any werewolves in any of them, although I am happy to be corrected!
8. Warren is one of "The Trio", along with Andrew and Jonathan. What type of animal lives in a warren?

Answer: Rabbit

Interesting information about rabbits? Hmmm. Little furry chaps, long ears, hop about a lot, taste good in stews. Oh, and notoriously *ahem* prolific in the breeding stakes.
9. In early episodes of "Buffy", there was a character called Cordelia Chase. In which play by Shakespeare does Cordelia appear?

Answer: King Lear

Brief plot summary: old king cuts youngest daughter (Cordelia) out of his will, then wishes he hadn't when his other daughters cut him. Just about everyone ends up dead (as usual in Shakespearean tragedy).
10. Finally, in what part of the world would you find the true vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus?

Answer: Central and South America

As most people know, vampire bats feed on the blood of sleeping animals (usually cattle, horses or pigs) by making cuts in the animal's skin with their teeth, then lap up (rather than suck) the blood that seeps from the wound. Their saliva contains chemicals that keep the blood from clotting and also numb the animal's skin to stop them waking up.
