Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the former name of the Republic of Benin?

Answer: Dahomey

Benin was a former member of the French West Africa (collective name of former French colonies encompassing present-day Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Senegal). When the country gained its independence in 1960, it retained "Dahomey" as its name. It wasn't until 1975 when the country adopted the name "Benin."
2. What was the name of the literary movement founded 1915 in Switzerland in a spirit of rebellion and disillusion during WWI?

Answer: Dada

The Dada was founded by Tristan Tzara and other intellectuals in 1916 in Zurich, Switzerland. The name of the movement - French for "hobbyhorse" - was allegedly picked at random from a dictionary. The movement reflected nihilistic protest against all facets of Western culture, especially militarism which was brought about by the 1st World War.

The movement declined in the 1920's and some of its followers became prominent surrealists.
3. What do you call the study of animal behavior?

Answer: Ethology

Ethologists believe that majority of an animal's knowledge is instinctive. In some species of insects, ethologists believe that, at birth, genes instil behavioral sequences that govern how an insect will react to a given situation.
4. Where were the 1994 Winter Olympic Games held?

Answer: Lillehammer

5. Who won the 1997 Miss Universe Pageant?

Answer: Brook Lee

Brooke Lee represented the US at the 1997 Miss Universe Pageant held in Florida. When asked what she would do if there were no rules for a day, she said she would eat a lot. Her answer to the final question addressed the controversy surrounding the weight gain of reigning Ms Universe Alicia Machado. Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago were crowned 1st and 2nd runners-up respectively.
6. Complete this line from "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix": "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the __________ dies"?

Answer: seventh month

The line was from the prophecy of Sybill Trelawney pertaining to the person who can defeat Voldemort. Although the prophecy applied to both Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter, the latter was deemed to be the subject of the prophecy for he met the other conditions mentioned in the prophecy (being marked by Voldemort as an equal, etc).
7. Which of the following words does not belong to the group: bric-a-brac, gewgaws, gimcracks, wigwam? (consider the meaning of each word)

Answer: wigwam

Bric-a-brac, gewgaws, and gimcracks all refer to decorative objects or ornaments. A wigwam is a kind of dwelling that American Indians use.
8. In Greek Mythology, who is Hemera?

Answer: Day

According to Hesiod's "Theogony," Hemera was an offspring of Erebus (primeval darkness) and Nyx (night). Hemera's other "siblings" were Nemesis (divine retribution) and Aether (pure upper atmosphere).
9. At the end of 2001, who was the longest - serving Pope of the 20th Century?

Answer: Leo XIII

On March 14, 2004, Pope John Paul II broke past Pope Leo XIII's 9280 days in office (the longest in 125 years), thereby becoming the longest serving Pope since Pius IX (1846-1878). However, at the end of 2001, Pope Leo XIII still held the record. Therefore, he was the longest serving Pope of the 20th Century, not John Paul II. Leo XIII was Pope from 1878 to 1903.
