Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am in one of my favourite stores. It sells music, movies and games - what could be better? I'm browsing through the music section, looking at an album from Noah and The Whale. What was the name of their debut album?

Answer: Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down

The name of the band came from a favourite movie of the band members, 'The Squid and The Whale', which was both written and directed by Noah Baumbach. That, of course, combines both for 'Noah and The Whale'. The title of the movie came from a famous diorama in the American Museum of Natural History, 'the sperm whale and the giant squid'.
2. Moving on to the movie section, I notice a man peering intently at me from across the aisle. He continues to stare and I quickly pick up a DVD and study it. Reading the cover, I discover it stars Keisha Castle-Hughes in the lead role. Which whale movie have I picked up?

Answer: Whale Rider (2002)

Keisha Castle-Hughes plays Pai, who believes she is destined to be the next tribe leader of the Whangara people. However, she has to fight generations of history, tradition...and her grandfather. The type of whale in the movie is the Southern Right Whale. Right whales are generally dark grey or black in colour. They have a broad back with no dorsal fin and are quite distinctive due to callosities (calluses) on the top of their heads which appear white or light grey.
3. Looking up from the DVD, I see the same man heading towards me. I move off and duck behind a cardboard standee of a famous actor. Well known for being a captain of the 'Starship Enterprise', this actor also starred as the whale-obsessed Captain Ahab. Who am I dodging behind?

Answer: Patrick Stewart

'Moby Dick' is perhaps the most famous depiction of a whale hunt in literature. Whaling or whale hunting is a controversial pursuit that is overseen by the International Whaling Commission, which was formed in 1946. There are considered different descriptions of whaling, including scientific research, aboriginal-subsistence whaling and commercial whaling.
4. As I sidle furtively out from behind my cardboard camouflage, I'm distracted as I notice a game I have played on my PC. In this game you play the commander of a space freighter and you and your crew must trade and barter in order to raise money, upgrade the dilapidated freighter and make it home. Which game has distracted me from my departure?

Answer: Whale's Voyage

Like the ship in the game, whales are known to travel vast distances for food. The Killer Whale will travel approximately 500 miles in a week to feed. Killer Whales use echolocation for feeding, using their nasal cavity to send out high-frequency clicks which bounce off their surroundings and create echoes which the whale receives back through its lower jaw.
5. Oops, I've been spotted and he is hurrying towards me now. In my haste to throw off my tail, I stumble and damage my heel. Making my way, quickly if lopsidedly, to the nearest shoe store, which designer shoes do I reject as their red soles are too distinctive?

Answer: Christian Louboutin

Christian Louboutin is a French shoe designer, known for his signature red soles. The red sole first appeared in 1992 - he says he was attempting to give a pair of shoes more 'energy' and painted the soles with bright red nail polish. He brought stiletto heels back into fashion during the 1990s and is associated with high fashion shoe design.

Whales have influenced even the fashion world, with whalebone being used historically in stiffening women's dresses and corsets. Whalebone is more correctly termed baleen, from the species of whale it comes from. It is actually composed of keratin and allows baleen whales to feed.
6. New shoes sorted, I walk out of the store only to discover that man is still on my tail. Deciding to lose myself in a cloud of perfume, I head into a department store to search for my favourite perfume, made by a Japanese designer famous for developing a new method of pleating, now branded under Pleats Please. Which perfume am I searching for?

Answer: L'eau d'Issey

Issey Miyake first launched L'eau d'Issey in 1992. He is known for releasing a limited edition fragrance each year. In 2009, the fragrance was developed by Daphne Bugey and was called 'A Drop of Cloud'. Ambergris, which is a waxy flammable substance produced by the digestive system of sperm whales, was historically used as a fixative in perfumery.
7. Although my pursuer notices me, he is distracted as a helpful shop assistant squirts a cloud of cologne right in front of him. I take the opportunity to jump onto the escalator which takes me down to the home wares department. I notice a range of cookware that I've always admired. Founded in France in 1925, which company is famous for its enameled cast-iron cookware?

Answer: Le Creuset

Enameled cast-iron cookware is popular for its longevity and is commonly used in modern Dutch ovens. In certain countries in the world, such as Norway and Japan, whale meat is enjoyed as a specialty dish. In Norway, the whale meat eaten comes from Minke Whales. Whale meat is high in protein and low in saturated fat. However there, are concerns about the level of pollutants such as mercury that it may contain.
8. I move on to the bookstore, and pick up the nearest book. I peer over the top of it, watching as the man who has been following me emerges from the department store opposite. He can't seem to find me and as he moves off, I glance down at the book I have grabbed. I notice a sticker on it saying that it was the winner of the BBC Samuel Johnson prize in 2009. Which book have I been using as a shield?

Answer: 'Leviathan, Or The Whale' by Philip Hoare

The Samuel Johnson prize is an award for non-fiction, sponsored by the BBC. It is open to authors of non-fiction books for works about current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography or the arts. Philip Hoare has had a life-long obsession with whales and in this book he takes the reader around the world as he explores this fascination.
9. I am pretty sure that I have lost my tail for good, so now I can get on with the reason for my trip to the shopping centre. I'm buying a birthday present for my brother. He can be fussy, but I'm always safe with anything from his favourite Italian designer. Which designer, born in Piacenza, Italy, formed his own design company in 1975?

Answer: Giorgio Armani

As mentioned, whalebone has been used in women's stays and corsets. Men, however, have also used whalebone in order to cut a fine figure. During the 1820s men also wished to have a small waist and this was done with 'belts' or 'girdles' - because 'corsets' and 'stays' were female garments. Both achieved the same end though!
10. I'm delighted with my present and I walk out of the store smiling...and slam straight into my tail! 'You left this behind you, miss', he says as he hands me a package. I look down to see a statue that was my first purchase today. Feeling foolish now, I thank him. The statue is of Orcinus orca - which is more commonly known as what?

Answer: Killer Whale

Killer Whales are highly social creatures and are found in all of the oceans of the world. They are the largest species of the dolphin family. It is possibly the most familiar of all species of whales as it has appeared in multiple movies, including 'Free Willy' (and the sequels), 'The Island at the Top of the World' and 'Happy Feet'.
