Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following drove for the Sauber team in the 2015 Australian Formula 1 Grand-Prix?

Answer: Felipe Nasr

Daniil Kvyat drove for Red Bull, Max Verstappen for Toro Rosso and Felipe Massa for Williams. Nasr and Verstappen made their Formula 1 debut in the F1 Australia 2015 race.
2. Which English King died while sitting on a toilet (such as it was at the time). He was born in Germany and was the last British monarch born outside Great Britain.

Answer: George II

George II died while in "a little closet" on 25th October 1760. Wenceslaus III was actually a King of Bohemia who was murdered with a spear while sitting in the garderobe on August 4, 1306. Edmund II is reported as having been stabbed in the bowels while attending the outhouse, but probably died of natural causes. Henry VIII's death had no connection to a toilet that I am aware of.
3. In the original Disney cartoon version of Robin Hood which creature plays the part of Robin?

Answer: Fox

Released in 1973, this classic Disney animated cartoon starred the voice talents of Peter Ustinov (Prince John - a lion), Terry Thomas (Sir Hiss - a snake), Phil Harris (Little John - a bear) and Brian Bedford (Robin Hood - a fox).
4. What do Jim Morrison (Lead vocalist of The Doors) and Oscar Wilde (19th century Irish playwright) have in common?

Answer: They are both buried in Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Paris

Morrison was buried there in 1971, initially in an unmarked grave. It has unfortunately been vandalised several times. Oscar Wilde was originally buried in the Cimetiere de Bagneaux outside Paris following his death in 1900. His remains were disinterred and moved to the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in 1909.
5. What river flows over Niagara falls?

Answer: Niagara

Niagara Falls is actually a group of 3 separate waterfalls all fed by the Niagara river. The largest is the Horseshoe Falls which are mostly on the Canadian side of the Canadian-American border. The second largest is the American Falls which lie entirely within the United States and the smallest is the Bridal Falls, also entirely inside the United States.

More water pours over these three waterfalls than any other waterfall in the world.
6. What is the highest possible achievable break on a snooker table? Think carefully. Note the wording of the question.

Answer: 155

Under normal circumstances the maximum break achievable is 147 (15 Reds each followed by a Black, then the colours from yellow to black). It is however possible for an opponent to make a foul shot and leave the incoming player snookered with all 15 reds still on the table.

The player can then nominate one of the colours as a red ball (known as a "free ball"). It counts as a red ball. If a black is then potted, the player will have scored 8 with all the normal balls still on the table. i.e. a potential 147 points still available.

The maximum possible under these circumstances is therefore 155.
7. What weather phenomenon can sometimes be seen around a ship's mast during an electrical storm?

Answer: St. Elmo's Fire

It is named after St. Erasmus of Formia (also known as St. Elmo), patron saint of sailors. It is characterised by a blue/violet glow appearing round sharply pointed structures like masts, spires etc. It is usually caused by lightning which generates an electric field around the object in question, causing ionisation of air molecules and producing a glow easily seen in low light levels.

The other answers are all characters from Sesame Street.
8. Which actress played Elaine, the love interest of Ted Striker in the smash hit comedy "Airplane!" (also known as "Flying High!").

Answer: Julie Hagerty

The film won a Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy in 1981. One of the funniest films ever made in my humble opinion.
9. Which King is renowned for trying to turn back the tide according to legend?

Answer: King Canute (Cnut the Great)

Canute was King of Denmark, England, Norway and parts of Sweden. He lived circa 985-995 to 1035. His death and that of his heirs shortly after resulted in the Norman conquest of England in 1066. His name is associated with the possibly apocryphal anecdote that he attempted to turn back the tide.

In fact, it is believed to be far more likely that he wanted to demonstrate to his sycophantic courtiers that his secular power was nothing compared to the power of God and his failure to stop the tide coming in was a means to an end.

The story was recorded in the 12th century by Henry of Huntingdon.
10. There have been several bridges known as London Bridge over the centuries. The current London Bridge was opened in 1973. The previous London Bridge was bought in 1968, shipped in pieces to America and rebuilt in which American city in 1971?

Answer: Lake Havasu City, Arizona

The bridge, which had been in use since 1831 was sold for almost $2.5 million. It was then cut into large stone blocks which were shipped to Arizona. The stones were cut down again into pieces about 6 to 8 inches thick and used to clad a metal bridge frame over the Bridgewater Channel canal.
11. Which country plays test match cricket at a home ground called the Kensington Oval?

Answer: West Indies

The Kensington Oval is on the island of Barbados just to the west of the capital, Bridgetown. It is not to be confused with the Kennington Oval which is a home ground for the English cricket team in London.
12. Where in London is Poet's Corner?

Answer: Westminster Abbey

There are a high number of poets and writers buried and/or commemorated in the south transept of Westminster Abbey. Over 50 people are buried there including Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Lord Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling and Thomas Hardy. Over 80 other writers are commemorated there including Jane Austen, The Bronte sisters, Lord Byron, Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis and William Shakespeare.
13. On 21st December 1988, 243 passengers and 11 more on the ground were killed when an airliner was blown up over Lockerbie in Scotland. Which airline owned the plane?

Answer: Pan American World Airways

President Gaddafi of Libya accepted responsibility for the bomb in 2003. There were a number of famous people booked on the flight but who didn't take their seat for one reason or another. Amongst them were:- The Four Tops, World Number 1 tennis player Mats Wilander and actress Kim Cattrall.
14. Cary Grant was a director of which cosmetics company?

Answer: Faberge

He was appointed to the board in the late 1960's, after he had retired from acting. He was not just a 'face' for the company. He regularly attended board meetings. He was also on the boards of Hollywood Park (a gaming company in Las Vegas), the Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle, Hollywood, California), Western Airlines (acquired by Delta Air Lines in 1987), and the film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
15. By what name is the symbol of Rolls Royce cars known?

Answer: Spirit of Ecstasy

Also called the "Silver Lady" or the "Flying Lady", it takes the form of a woman leaning forward with her arms outstretched behind her. She is wearing a loose fitting top which billows out. The net effect is that she has wings. The Spirit of Ecstasy was created in 1911, becoming an optional extra on Rolls Royce cars thereafter until made a standard fitting in the early 1920's.

There have been many versions of 'the Spirit', the eleventh being introduced in 2003. You can if you wish, have one made encrusted with diamonds.
