Answer: Leo

Leo is represented by the lion and ruler of the fifth house of the Zodiac. Cancer is the crab, Libra the scales and Capricorn is the goat. In this Zodiac each month is ruled by a different symbol, most being animals but only one cat.

2. The Chinese Zodiac has me born in the year of a cat family member. Which of these felines rule every twelfth year?

Answer: tiger

The Tiger is the only cat in the Chinese Zodiac. The other animals are the rooster, ox, horse, monkey, pig, rabbit, dog, dragon, sheep, snake, and rat. Each animal rules this zodiac for a year instead of a month.

3. One of my favorite poems was written by Carl Sandburg. What does he describe as "coming in on little cat feet"?

Answer: fog

The fog comes in
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

This poem was included in Sandburg's first major collection of poems in a volume called "Chicago Poems" published in 1916. This collection also includes another famous work of his called "Chicago" which includes the famous line, "Hog butcher of the world."

All of these writers were cat lovers. Hemingway, the American novelist and journalist, had over thirty cats in his home. Sand, French novelist and feminist, used to share her morning tea with her cat. Colette, another French author, wrote many short stories about felines. However Aldous Huxley, author of "Brave New World" was the enthusiastic one quoted here.

Answer: They kept vermin away.

The Egyptians were perhaps the first to notice the benefits of keeping vermin - and the diseases they carry - away from the food supply. It is not known exactly when this occurred but the domesticated cat crossed into Egypt from the African veld. The Egyptians were quick to notice these animals were quiet, clean, and expert at purging the rodents from the fields and granaries.

Cats began regaining favor during the Renaissance. Shakespeare honored the cat in "The Merchant of Venice", and Richelieu did will his cats quite a fortune, but these were small steps on the road to acceptance. It was only after the French Revolution that Pasteur was able to show a world torn apart by disease, that cats were very hygienic. Robespierre was probably too busy making people miserable to notice cats.

In addition to those listed, I also found aclurophobia, ailurophobia, and galeophobia. Ailouros is the Greek word for cats and Eluro and acluro are alternate spellings for this word. Galeo is Greek for polecat. Gato is Spanish for cat and feline from the Latin felinus. I made up the other phobia.

Cynophobia from the Greek word kyon which means dog and phobos (fear). The others are my fabrications.

A cat sleeps to 18 hours! No wonder they have so much energy when awake. Since hunting is a hit or miss affair, cats have to conserve their energy thus all those little naps.
