The moon is only made up of rocks and dust and has a lot of highlands and craters. There are also a lot of volcanoes, however, that haven't erupted for many many years. Some scientists believe that the moon was formed by something large hitting the Earth and the moon was a chunk that flew off and started orbiting around the Earth on its own.

There are many theories on how the moon was formed, too many for me to name all of them. Nothing has been proven yet.

Answer: Alan Shepard

Alan Shepard was the first American in space. He was born November 18, 1923 in East Derry, New Hampshire. He was also the 5th man, out of only a dozen, to walk on the moon. On his second and last flight, and as commander of Apollo 14, he ended the flight by hitting a golf ball on the moon and it went 2400 feet, almost a half a mile! That flight took place on January 31, 1971.

Then, sadly, he died July 21, 1998.

There is a full moon each month. The full moon that occurs each month, has a specific name for each full moon. Jan.-Wolf Moon, Feb.-Snow Moon, March-Worm Moon, April-Pink Moon, May-Flower Moon, June-Strawberry Moon, July-Buck Moon, Aug.-Sturgeon Moon, Sept.-Harvest Moon, Oct.-Hunter's Moon, Nov.-Beaver Moon, Dec.-Cold Moon.

Answer: Jim Carrey

This film was directed my Milos Forman in 1999. Jim Carrey starred in the movie, "Man on the Moon." It's about the life and career of comedian, Andy Kaufman, which is played by Jim Carrey. Along with Gerry Becker as Stanley Kaufman and Leslie Lyles as Janice Kaufman. It was nominated for 1 Golden Globe award and won in 2000 and it was nominated for a Grammy in 2001.

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra sang the jazz song titled, "Blue Moon" in the 1950's. It is on his album called, "Blue Moon." It was originally written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. It has had many other singers besides Frank Sinatra. The Marcels, the Supremes, Showaddywaddy, and John Alford all sang "Blue Moon" after Frank Sinatra. Tobey Keith had a song called, "Does that Blue Moon Ever Shine on You?"

Answer: It's when 4 full moons occur in a calendar season.

A blue moon occurs when there are 4 full moons in a calendar seasons or three months. It can also be considered a blue moon if two full moons occur in the same month. There is a full moon every 29 1/2 days, so it can happen in any month except for February.

There is a blue moon about every 33 months. There are times that February doesn't have a full moon, but it only happens about 4-5 times every hundred years.

Answer: Pluto

The moon is bigger than Pluto. The moon is 3476 km in diameter and Pluto is 2274 km in diameter. Pluto is now classified as a "dwarf planet." The moon is smaller than all the other planets in our solar system. Scientist say that the moon is more like a planet.

They call the "earth-moon system" a "Double Planet". Pluto is smaller than 7 moons in our solar system: the moon, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan and Triton.

Answer: Lost Moon

The film, "Apollo 13", was based off the book, "Lost Moon". Apollo 13 was a failed mission to the moon in April 1970. "Apollo 13" is based off the actual experience from the failed mission. The mission failed due to an oxygen tank that exploded and they had to use the lunar module to stay alive.

They had to cut the mission short and try to return home safely. There were three astronauts on this mission, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Jack Haise. Jim Lovell (the commander of Apollo 13) and Jeffery Kluger wrote the book. "Apollo 13" was nominated for seven Oscar awards and won two Oscar awards in 1996; it was nominated for 4four Golden Globe awards in 1996.

Answer: Luna 2

Luna 2 was the first unmanned mission to land on the moon in 1959 and later Luna 3 in late 1959. It took Luna 1 and 2 thirty-six hours to reach the moon. Luna 2 is most famous for it's discovery of the solar winds. It initiated the era of direct contact that would help scientists learn the composition and age of the lunar surface rocks.

This mission confirmed that the moon has no magnetic field and it found no evidence of radiation belts.

Answer: Galileo

Galileo Galilei was born February, 15 1564 and died January 8, 1642. In 1608 he made a telescope with 3x magnification and he used that telescope to discover many things in the night sky. He was an Italian physicist, astronomer, astrologer, and philosopher.

In the week of January 7, 1610, he discovered Jupiter's four largest moons, Io, Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede. He also observed Venus and Saturn and discovered Saturn's rings. He was one of the first Europeans to observe sunspots. There were many other things that he observed and discovered in the sky at night.
