Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. War battles are fought in all kinds of places and conditions: in cold and heat, in fields and forests, in spring and winter. Which of the following battles did not take place in snow and ice?

Answer: Battle of Arnhem

All of these battles were fought during WWII. The Battle of Arnhem, which took place in September of 1944, was part of Operation Market Garden, a plan which the Allies hoped would end the war by Christmas of 1944. It failed. The Winter War was fought between the Finns and Soviets in 1941-1942. Stalingrad, the bloodiest battle in war history, was fought between the Germans and Russians in 1942-43.

The Battle of the Bulge, or Battle of the Ardennes, took place in 1944 and 1945; many soldiers died of cold or had to have frostbitten limbs amputated.
2. In one animated Disney movie, a group of animals are trekking across the English countryside when snow and ice set in and they nearly freeze to death. Which movie am I talking about?

Answer: 101 Dalmatians

This movie was based on a book by Dodie Smith, author of "I Capture the Castle". This film was the first Disney movie to have the drawings Xeroxed onto the film cells, resulting in a scratchy look that remained the Disney style until "The Rescuers".
3. In the 1997 movie "Titanic" the ship strikes an iceberg and sinks, causing the deaths of 1500 passengers and crew. In what year did the real ship sink?

Answer: 1912

It struck on 11:40 at night on 14 April 1912 and sank below the water at 2:20 a.m. on 15 April. A ship was nearby that could have taken on all of the passengers and saved them, but the radio operator had turned off the radio for the night and failed to receive the distress signal.
4. In which series of fantasy novels do a group of Victorian girls with magical powers travel to the Winterlands, where a giant tree and corrupt creatures await?

Answer: "The Gemma Doyle" trilogy

Libba Bray wrote this series, which consists of the books "A Great and Terrible Beauty," "Rebel Angels," and "The Sweet Far Thing". Each title comes from a line of poetry. Some of the plot of "The Darkest Age" takes place in snow deserts as well.
5. At the beginning of the film "The Empire Strikes Back" we see the rebels on an icy planet. What is its name?

Answer: Hoth

These scenes were shot in Norway, which at the time was having its worst winter in fifty years. Mark Hamill, as Luke, went out in the snow while the crew was in the hotel shooting from the doorway, all nice and warm.
6. Dry ice is commonly used to preserve foods, in medical procedures, and to create the effect of fog. At what temperature does it turn from a solid into a gas?

Answer: -109.3 F or -78.5 C

During the shooting of the 1931 movie "Dirigible", director Frank Capra wanted the actors to put dry ice in cages in their mouths to simulate breath on a cold day. One of the actors put the ice cube directly in his mouth and lost his tongue as a result. Ouch.
7. What kind of wine is made from grapes frozen on the vine?

Answer: Ice wine

The grapes are typically harvested in December. The result is a very sweet wine. The downside? It's very expensive. Each frozen grape yields only a few drops of juice, so it takes about ten times as many grapes to make a bottle of ice wine as it does a regular bottle. Most wineries charge just for tasting it.
8. In what Beatles song would you find the following lyrics? "Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting. Little darling, it feels like years since it's been clear".

Answer: Here Comes the Sun

This song comes from "Abbey Road". George Harrison wrote it after he had gotten through troubles in his life and things finally began to calm down.
9. In what anime series do the people live on a planet where they get 180 days of sunshine when carnivorous plants try to eat them, and then 180 days of night when the planet becomes a winter desert?

Answer: Jyu-oh-sei

The title means "Beast King Planet". "Now and Then, Here and There" is almost the opposite, taking place on Earth ten billion years in the future when the Sun and Earth are closer together and the Sun has boiled away the oceans.
10. The 1985 mini-series "The Last Place on Earth" charts the true story of two groups from Great Britain and Norway who, in 1911, each want to be the first to reach which very cold place?

Answer: The South Pole

The Norwegians brought along sled dogs just for the purpose of eating when the food supplies ran out. The explorers from Great Britain brought horses, which fared poorly in the cold weather and had to be killed.
