Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did Jack go up the hill with?

Answer: Jill

As with most nursery rhymes, this has its roots in fact. It is thought to refer to the beheading of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
2. In the film "I'm Alright Jack", who played the role of Fred Kite, the union shop steward?

Answer: Peter Sellers

The other three were also in the film. Ian Carmichael and Terry Thomas were also in one of my favourite Ealing type comedies, "School For Scoundrels". If you haven't seen it then you have missed out. Ealing Studios was a British film studio famous for its post-war black and white films.
3. Which Jack was the principal character in "Patriot Games"?

Answer: Jack Ryan

Jack Ryan was played in "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" by Harrison Ford, by Alec Baldwin in "The Hunt for Red October", and by Ben Affleck in "The Sum of All Fears".
4. Which of the following was a British children's tea-time television show, in which famous faces read books for the younger viewers?

Answer: Jackanory

"Jackanory" was on the BBC at 5.30 PM every weekday. Although I did not really enjoy it then, preferring cartoons such as "Scooby Doo" and "Hong Kong Phooey". The list of celebrities who actually read the stories is quite impressive including HRH Prince Charles, Dame Judi Dench and Rik Mayall. The person with the most appearances was Bernard Cribbins (with over 100 appearances).
5. Which of the following would be most likely to be in a jack-knife incident on the motorway?

Answer: Articulated Lorry

The term Jack-knife when referring to a vehicle accident is used because of the folding effect between the cab and the attached trailer being very similar to the action of a folding or Jack-knife.
6. Who or what is "Spring Heeled Jack"?

Answer: mythical London figure

The first sighting of Spring Heeled Jack seems to have taken place around September 1837 but, curiously, he has been reported as being seen as late as 1948; which would have made him an impossible 120+ years old.
7. What is the flag of the United Kingdom commonly referred to as?

Answer: Union Jack

Although the correct terminology is the Union Flag, I don't know of anyone who refers to it as such. The term 'Jack' in this instance is from the flag flown on the bow of a ship.
8. Jack the Ripper was a murderer in London. But in what area of London did the murders take place?

Answer: Whitechapel

Walford is the imaginary name given to the area which is the setting for the BBC soap "EastEnders", similarly Sun Hill where the police drama "The Bill" is set. Mayfair is one of the most expensive property areas in London.
9. Who is known as the Golden Bear?

Answer: Jack Nicklaus

To commemorate the 134th British Open, the Royal Bank of Scotland issued two million £5 notes with Jack on the back of them. At the Open an enterprising man got Jack to sign the back of the note instantly increasing the value at least ten fold.
10. Which of the following is a jack?

Answer: All of these are a jack

A car jack is a lifting device for a car, used for changing a flat tyre. The small white ball in carpet or green bowls is known as a Jack, and there is a small tropical fish called a 'Jack Dempsey' after the boxer.
