Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some 700 newspapers in 20 countries printed a beloved comic strip about Mooch, Ozzie and Earl. The strip is named after Earl, who is one of the what?

Answer: Mutts

Award-winning cartoonist and author Patrick McDonnell created "Mutts" in 1994, including fish, squirrels, cats, dogs, a crab, a mussel, and other talking characters, such as people, in his comic strip. Earl is based on McDonnell's dog Earl, "A small mutt with a big heart". "Calvin and Hobbes" and "Pogo" are also comic strips. Puss cats are just funny.
2. You've heard of Earl Grey tea, an English black tea flavored with citrus oil. What would be added to Russian Earl Grey, do you suppose?

Answer: Vodka

Da! Russian Earl Grey tea contains vodka and lemon grass, in addition to the original recipe. The other answers are all Russian ballet dancers you might recognize. Earl Grey is a black tea blended with the oil from the rind of a bergamot orange, giving it a distinctive aroma and taste.

It is named after the second Earl Grey, a British Prime Minister. Lady Grey has a variant, also. Earl Grey tea is often mentioned in books, film, music, television and video games. Captain Jean-Luc Picard drinks it, as does Frasier, Ciel Phantomhive, and piglet. James Bond does, too, naturally.
3. In its original Old English, Eorl referred to a baron, duke or king. Which of these is NOT a meaning of the name?

Answer: Jehovah

Princes, lords or noblemen are rulers or commanders, where Jehovah means God. Earl originates from the ancient Saxon word "eorl" meaning elder or wise man of the village, later referring to a ruler, and then only to a man of noble birth. In the US, Earl was a top name from the late 1800s until the 1970s, with variations Urles, Jarel, and Rollo as well as many others. Girls also used the name, as Earlene or Eriel, for instance. Earl as a last name has its own coat of arms, and can be traced back to at least 1086 England. Earl is also a common middle name.
4. Television character and small time criminal Earl Hickey, whose name is Earl, made past wrongs right from 2005 to 2009. What life-changing event funded his change of heart?

Answer: Earl won the lottery.

In "My Name Is Earl", actor Jason Lee played petty criminal and general idiot Earl Hickey. Earl won $100,000 in the lottery, was hit by a car, discovered the concept of karma, and decided to make a list of all the bad things he'd done to others and make them right. Created by Greg Garcia, the show ran from 2005 to May 2009, with excellent ratings and two nominations for Best International Programme at the British Academy Television Awards.

Despite its ratings, it was cancelled abruptly, so we may never know if Earl erased enough bad karma to avoid coming back as a lower life form.

In 2011, Greece aired its variation of the show.
5. Sing this one: "Yes, I'm gonna love you. Come on let me hold you, darlin', 'cause I'm the..." He can't be stopped, no, because he's the what?

Answer: Duke of Earl

"Duke of Earl" was a 1962 number one song by Gene Chandler, who dubbed himself the Duke of Earl after its success. Penned by Bernice Williams, Chandler (as Eugene Dixon) and Earl Edwards, it was selected as one of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

It sold over one million copies in just one month. It's been covered by Sha Na Na, The Beach Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others, and appears in a wide range of cultural references and parodies. As for the Duke of Earl, he could not be stopped.

In 2012, at age 75 he was still performing.
6. Large and powerful, who packed a 2010 punch in a wide arc from the Leeward Islands, along the US coast, hurling ashore in Nova Scotia, Canada?

Answer: Hurricane Earl

Formed on August 25th, 2010, Hurricane Earl attained winds of 145 mph (230 km/h) causing damage and fatalities at the Leeward Islands, along the North Carolina and Massachusetts coasts, then making landfall as a hurricane near Nova Scotia. Earl dissipated on September fourth. An avalanche is a massive snow slide, a derecho is a fast moving thunderstorm similar to a tornado but in a more direct line, and a typhoon is a hurricane in Asia.

There have been at least four hurricanes and two tropical storms named Earl.
7. This Earl is known for a marvelous topline, well-shaped conformation and perfect character. If he's also a sire, what is Earl?

Answer: A horse

Earl is a horse, in his case a Hanoverian and a breeding sire. The horse world, like the world of cars, bulls and kings, has its own language. A topline runs from poll to croup (essentially head to tail) along the back and tells much about the strength, capabilities and beauty of a horse. Conformation is the overall bone structure, and perfect character means of good temperament.

A "sire" is a human king, but a horse sire is a male capable of producing offspring; or the father of a specific horse. Reproducing bulls are also called sires.
8. Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, The Harley Earl Blues Band, Dave Earl, and Earl Sweatshirt may be good musicians, but could they duel with this bluegrass banjo great named Earl?

Answer: Earl Scruggs

American Earl Scruggs (1924 to 2012) "made the banjo talk" it was often said, and brought to bluegrass a riveting three-finger picking style ("Scruggs Style") that earned him a place in the "International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor". His recording of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" in 2001 featured comedian and musician Steve Martin on banjo. Ronnie Earl, The Harley Earl Blues Band, Dave Earl, and Earl Sweatshirt are also musicians. Earl Hickey is the character from the television show "My Name Is Earl".
9. This bad boy with the middle name of Earl chose the dark side, seeking to gain complete domination and power over the Empire! Who gave his famous voice to the character Darth Vader?

Answer: James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones, born 1931, dubbed the chilling voice of the "Star Wars" trilogy anti-hero Darth Vader, because the bodybuilder actor (David Prowse) who played Darth in physical form had a strong English accent. Initially Jones asked to be uncredited as he felt his contribution was "just special effects", but eventually the voice of Jones was so closely tied to the image of Darth Vader, Jones was heard in several other movies, video games and at Disneyland, as Vader.
10. Speaking of Earl, what's the acronym for the Evaluation and Report Language?

Answer: EARL

The Evaluation and Report Language (EARL) is one of many EARL acronyms. It is a test result format that a machine can read, so tests can be read and scored quickly. Other acronyms include Easy Access Report Language, Electronic Acquisition Reference Library, Enhanced Address Recognition Logic, and oddly, (URL) Uniform Resource Locator (pronounced EARL). If not for systems named Earl, we'd all be struggling with a mouthful.
