Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Le quattro stagioni' by Vivaldi is a wonderful classical composition. I've played 'La primavera' (Spring), 'L'estate' (Summer) and 'L'autunno' (Autumn). What's the missing fourth piece?

Answer: 'L'inverno' (Winter)

'The Four Seasons' is a suite of four violin concertos, composed by Antonio Vivaldi in 1723. Sections from this Baroque masterpiece are commonplace in movies, advertising themes and in many wedding ceremonies. Each concerto is accompanied by a sonnet.
2. My laboratory DNA synthesizer is lacking an essential base. I have got Cytosine, Guanine and Adenine. What is missing?

Answer: Thymine

DNA is comprised of two long strands of nucleotides containing sugars and phosphate groups. Linking the two chains are four nucleobases (bases), which always occur in pairs: cytosine pairs with guanine and adenine pairs with thymine. It is the order of these bases within the DNA that conveys genetic information.
3. My children have just been watching the show 'Teletubbies'. I can remember three names - Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po - but which was the fourth, purple one?

Answer: Tinky Winky

The 'Teletubbies' show, targeted at a pre-school audience, was created by Ragdoll Productions for the BBC and ran from 1997 to 2001. There was some broader media interest and public attention in the show when it was suggested in 'The National Liberty Journal' that Tinky Winky was a gay icon because he carried a red handbag.
4. Doing some research for my science project, I found that the Ancient Greeks believed that matter consisted of four classical elements. These were earth, water, fire and something else. What is this missing element?

Answer: air

The Ancient Greeks believed all matter was made up from differing proportions of these four elements. Aristotle supported this theory which had been developed much earlier (around 450BC). Hippocrates treated these four elements as the four 'humors' in the human body. Interestingly, these four elements resemble the four states of matter we know today: solid (earth), liquid (water), gas (air) and plasma (fire).

This information came from 'Home Science Tools': www.hometrainingtools.com.
5. Oh no - mathematics homework! I've been asked for the fourth element in this series: 1, 16, 81, ... Can you work out what this missing number should be?

Answer: 256

The numbers are increasing integers from one raised to the fourth power. 1^4 = 1, 2^4 = 16, 3^4 = 81, 4^4 = 256 (= 4 x 4 x 4 x 4).
6. Time to chill out in front of the TV. Flicking through the channels, I spot an old favorite involving four crime-fighting turtles with great skills in martial arts. Mmm, Donatello, Michelangelo and Leonardo came readily to mind. But who was the fourth member of this quartet?

Answer: Raphael

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles battle crime from within their base of the sewers of New York City. They are trained and guided by their sensei, the rat called Splinter. The TMNT were created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman and first appeared in comics 1984. Since then, there have been several animated TV series and at least four feature films.
7. Another day, another science project. This time I've been asked to study the four 'terrestrial' planets in our solar system. Easy - that's Earth, Venus and Mars... but what is the fourth?

Answer: Mercury

The rock-based, terrestrial planets are the inner planets of our solar system. They contrast with the much less dense, gas giants - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
8. The 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' are supposedly indicators of the end of the world. Three of these are Death, War and Pestilence. Who is the fourth rider?

Answer: Famine

The 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' are described in Chapter 6 of the Book of Revelation, the last book in the Bible's New Testament. The appearance of the four horseman is meant to presage the Last Judgment.
9. Time for more music! I've been asked to write short biographies of each member of my favorite musical group, The Beatles. I've diligently compiled short stories on John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr). Which member of the 'fab four' have I missed?

Answer: George Harrison

George Harrison was known as the 'Quiet Beatle'. Although overshadowed by the Lennon-McCartney songwriting juggernaut, George still wrote some classic songs, both as a Beatle and then afterwards in his solo career. 'Something', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and 'My Sweet Lord' are amongst his best. George also was involved with funding films, notably the efforts of the Monty Python team.

He died in 2001 at age 58 from lung cancer.
10. Time to watch a classic film. Great, it's got my favorite actress, Katharine Hepburn. I know she won four academy awards for best actress, starting with 'Morning Glory' in 1934. She also won in 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' (1968) and the following year with 'The Lion in Winter'. But which movie, in which Henry Fonda won the Best Actor Oscar in his last appearance, earned Hepburn her fourth award?

Answer: On Golden Pond

Katharine Hepburn also received eight further best actress nominations in her long and wonderful career. She holds the record (48 years) for longest period between first and last Oscars. She also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild.

She was born in Hartford Connecticut in 1907 and died at the age of 96. Her affair with Howard Hughes was portrayed in the movie 'The Aviator', where she was played by Cate Blanchett.
