Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the woman in pre-Prohibition America who would show up at taverns and start tearing things apart with a hatchet?

Answer: Carrie Nation

All these women were members of temperance movements, but it was Ms. Nation (born Carrie Moore, in Kentucky) who was arrested 30 times for what she called "hatchetations", in which she would march into a bar with her supporters and sing hymns while smashing the merchandise and the fixtures.

She was pleased when President McKinley was killed, because she thought that he'd brought it on himself by secretly drinking alcohol. A pleasant lady.
2. This children's television program showcased "Thomas the Tank Engine", and depending on the season starred Ringo Starr or George Carlin as Mr. Conductor. What was the name of the show?

Answer: Shining Time Station

The show was aired in 1989 and ran until 1993, then ran in re-runs on Nick Jr and Fox Family. Didi Conn played Stacy Jones, who was the train station manager, and Brian O'Connor played the money-mad Schemer. The town's mayor, of course, is Osgood Bob Flopdinger.
3. The Dance of Death is an allegory meant to remind us that we will all eventually die, from the lowest and meanest to the highest and most powerful. In German, the expression is 'Totentanz'. What is it in French?

Answer: Danse Macabre

The earliest artistic representations of the Danse Macabre are in a Parisian cemetery from 1424. Typically, they include Death leading a parade of dancing figures from all walks of life, but all the figures have been reduced to skeletons. 'Danca de Morte' is the Portuguese for the Dance of Death, 'Memento Mori' is a reminder of death in Latin, and 'Ars Moriendi' is the art of death and how to die well.
4. What is the term oceanographers use to describe a hypoxic (low-oxygen) area of the ocean, which cannot support a normal amount of life?

Answer: Dead Zone

The largest dead zone ever discovered and recorded covered over 27,000 square miles. Of human-influenced dead zones, the presumed cause is the extensive use of chemical fertilizers which eventually reach the seas and cause algal blooms and hypoxia. One of the bigger zones is at the outflow of the Mississippi River, in the Gulf of Mexico.
5. Who is the actress who was nominated for four Emmy awards and won one playing Cybill Shepherd's best friend (and lush) Maryanne Thorpe on "Cybill"?

Answer: Christine Baranski

The other actresses appeared on the show as well (Pfeiffer and Witt as Cybill's daughters, Fairchild as her rival). Baranski scored another Emmy nomination for appearing on "Frasier", and she won a Screen Actor's Guild award for her work on the 1996 movie "The Birdcage".
6. The ancient Egyptians used a crushed plant root to create a light red dye. In the 19th century, something called 'alizarin crimson' began to replace it in painting because it was thought to be longer lasting, but now the original has been determined to be more permanent. What is this artistic substance better known as?

Answer: Rose Madder

The Common Madder plant's scientific name is Rubia tinctorium, and the Color Index classification of the dye is Natural Red 9. During the Renaissance, artists didn't make much use of the color because it was considered weak and ephemeral.
7. R.E.M.'s second American top ten hit came from the album "Green" in 1989, and a bit of the chorus is "Now face North/ Think about direction/ Wonder why you haven't before". What is this catchy tune called?

Answer: Stand

Fox used the song "Stand" as the theme music to the Chris Elliott sitcom "Get a Life" in 2003, and Weird Al Yankovic did his own version called (of course) "Spam". R.E.M.'s original peaked at #6 on the Billboard charts.
8. In 1995, Dave Pelzer wrote an autobiography about his childhood and the abuse he suffered at the hands of his alcoholic mother. The title is "A Child Called ___: One Child's Courage to Survive". What is the missing word of this title?

Answer: "It"

Pelzer's book has met with some controversy since its publication, with several family members disputing the events as he portrayed them, but one of his teachers backs him up, calling him "the most severely abused child I have ever known."
9. What malady was W.C. Fields talking about when he said "The best cure (for it) is to get a lot of sleep"?

Answer: Insomnia

Joseph Wood Krutch said about the disorder "Cats are rather delicate creatures and they are subject to a good many different ailments, but I have never heard of one who suffered from insomnia", and Shannon Fife describes it thus: "Insomnia: A contagious disease often transmitted from babies to parents".
10. All right - you've come all this way and you have all the clues you need to find the common bond. Who or what is it?

Answer: Stephen King

The clues are all titles of Stephen King's books: "Carrie" (as in Carrie Nation), "The Shining" (as in "Shining Time Station"), "Danse Macabre" (a nonfiction work examining horror in film and literature), "The Dead Zone" (filmed by David Cronenberg and starring Christopher Walken), "Christine" (as in Christine Baranski), "Rose Madder" (published in 1995), "The Stand" (a la R.E.M.'s song), "It" (filmed as a miniseries starring Tim Curry as Pennywise) and "Insomnia" (set in one of King's terrifying towns--Derry, Maine).
