Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city, host of the 1988 Olympics, is the capital of the Republic of Korea?

Answer: Seoul

Seoul is one of the world's largest cities, and funnily enough, also one if it's safest!
2. What major sporting event was held in Korea in 2002?

Answer: FIFA World Cup

2002 saw the first ever jointly-hosted World Cup tournament. Japan and Korea shared the hosting duties and put on one of the most memorable world cups ever. Korea even made it as far as the semifinals, making them the most successful Asian team in World Cup history.
3. What does "hwa jang sil" mean in English?

Answer: toilet

Most Koreans know enough English that you may never need to ask for the toilet in Korean, but then again, after a pile of kimchi and soju you may not have time to ask!
4. Which of the following Korean foods originated in Japan?

Answer: donkasseu

While popular all over Korea, 'Donkasseu' is actually a Japanese food. It is a crumbed, fried pork cutlet with a drizzling of tasty brown sauce. Usually it is served with rice and some cabbage.
5. Which Korean-American has been on a Super Bowl winning team?

Answer: Hines Ward

Hines Ward won the Super Bowl in 2006 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Shortly afterwards he became a superstar in his mother's homeland! I was there to see him throw out the first pitch at a Doosan Bears baseball game in Seoul.
6. Which American holds the dubious honour of being the most hated sportsman in Korea?

Answer: Apolo Anton Ohno

During the Salt Lake Winter Olympics, Koreans were outraged by an alleged trip by Ohno on the favourite from Korea during a men's short track skating event. It sparked a nationwide backlash against the Americans and even led to the creation of a famous Korean pop song in which the singer bashes Bush, Ohno and everyone in between!
7. What on Earth is an "ajumma"?

Answer: Old woman

Ajummas could well be the pushiest pedestrians in Seoul's crowded streets! In fact, their pushiness has led to the fact that of all the words in the Korean language, Ajumma is one of the best known in English teaching circles. Beware the giant sun visor!
8. Many people from America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland and the UK travel to Korea to teach English. What is the name for the private institutions where they work?

Answer: hagwon

All of the other choices were monetary amounts. Cheon is 1,000, obaek is 500 and man is 10,000. Won is the Korean currency.
9. Seoul's city buses are divided into three colour groups. Red, Green and Blue. Which colour generally travels the farthest?

Answer: Red

Green buses operate within a "gu" or district, Blue buses go to various parts across the city, while Red buses are for travelling to Seoul's neighbouring cities.
10. Korea's tallest building is the 63 building, or Yuk-sam Bil-Ding. It is at the eastern end of what island?

Answer: Yeouido

Yeouido is a very interesting island. It is located right smack-bang in the middle of the city in the Han River, and features other interesting places like the National Assembly and television stations. In spring, it is home to a spectacular cherry blossom festival.
11. FC Seoul plays in the K-League football competition. In season 2005, a young star emerged as the next big thing in Korean soccer. Who is he?

Answer: Park Joo-young

Park Joo-young has taken Korean soccer by storm! He even scored a hat-trick on his birthday in 2005. He usually performs best with his teammate Ricardo sending him the ball, but does equally well alone. Within a few years, he is likely to be swimming in offers from European clubs.
12. What do Korean baseball clubs have in common?

Answer: They are all named for corporations

Korean baseball teams are all owned by 'Jaebol', which are huge corporations. This has led to team names such as Hyundai Unicorns, Samsung Lions, LG Twins and KIA Tigers. Who cares what city they are from after all!
13. International flights to Seoul now land at Incheon Airport in a separate city of over 1 million people to the west of the capital. But where is the old airport?

Answer: Gimpo

Gimpo is still in use as a domestic airport, but most traffic has been sent out to Incheon. You can find Gimpo on the purple subway line in the west of the city.
14. What is the name of the spectacular mountains near the city of Sokcho?

Answer: Seorak san

Seoraksan is considered the finest of Korea's national parks. In the mountains you can visit Buddhist temples or taste the delicious silkworm larvae on offer.
15. What is 'gaegogi'?

Answer: dog meat

Dog meat is available all over Korea, though since the World Cup, the restaurants have been shunted into back alleys to give Western visitors a more dog friendly opinion of Korea. In fact, during the world cup, dog meat was marketed in canned juice form to make it more acceptable to foreigners! Go on, give boshintang (spicy dog meat soup) a try!
