Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who was the leader of Libya from 1969-2011, had a real phobia of what?

Answer: Flying over water

Whenever this leader had to travel, he also preferred to lodge on the first floor of any building at which he stayed. In addition to that, he never travelled anywhere without his nurse, who was described as "a voluptuous blonde" and with whom he was rumoured to have had a romantic relationship for several years. One had to admire the stamina of the man.

He had several wives as well, one of whom had fallen into disfavour. Perhaps she objected to the nurse.
2. Austrian neurologist and founder of psychiatry Sigmund Freud had a real fear of which form of travel?

Answer: Train

Fear of train travel is known as siderodromophobia. Freud, who must be credited with at least attempting to be among the first to understand the various aspects of the human psyche (but whom I think was screwier than any of his patients), first experienced this phobia on a train trip which passed through Breslau.

He said the gas jets he saw there for the first time made him think of souls burning in hells. Why blame the poor old train for it? One would think he should have developed a fear of gas jets instead - but perhaps they weren't phallic enough looking for him.
3. The sad and fragile movie star Marilyn Monroe suffered from an almost overwhelming fear of speaking or appearing in public or open spaces. What is this fear known as?

Answer: Agoraphobia

This was the main reason behind the enormous difficulty that Marilyn had with delivering her lines correctly in movies, and which necessitated sometimes hundreds of re-takes. Such was its hold upon her that before she went onstage at any time, for hours beforehand she could be found white-faced and shaking with fear at the ordeal awaiting her, so much so that on many occasions she was physically ill.

However, she managed to carry it all off with aplomb. She preferred to just be a model for photographers in the seclusion of studios or in private places outside of that world, where she didn't have to speak or be overwhelmed by crowds and her fear of public places. Robert Mitchum once described her as a "Sad, lost child" and that short phrase basically sums up the entire life of this lovely, but haunted, actress.
4. Many famous people throughout history have suffered from a fairly common phobia known as ailurophobia. What is this a fear of?

Answer: Cats

Aww, the poor little moggies wouldn't hurt a fly. They just want to be worshiped and have their every whim catered to - much like those famous men themselves. Some of the big names who were reputed ailurophobics included Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte and Benito Mussolini. So much for the big brave hero. A miaow or two would have routed them completely it seems.
5. Here's a comical one. Actress Pamela Anderson has had a real reflecting fear of what?

Answer: Mirrors

What an unfortunate phobia for her particular job. This could explain exactly why the lovely Pamela's hair always looks so untidy - she has to comb it by feel rather than being guided by reflection. The fear of mirrors is known as eisoptrophobia. Pamela of course is most famous for the extremely uncomfortable looking swimsuit she wore for her role in the television series "Baywatch" which ran from 1990 to 1999 - and for her series of unfortunate choices in a marriage partner.
6. Which multi-legged beasts supposedly inspire fear and panic in film producer and director Steven Spielberg?

Answer: Insects

Well if that isn't the oddest thing - and look at some of the weird movies he's made featuring all sorts of scary creatures. "Jaws" in 1975, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" in 1982 and "Jurassic Park" in 1993 spring instantly to mind. One would have thought he would have been more afraid of sharks or dinosaurs at the very least - but insects it is. To a degree he shares his phobia with tennis player Andre Agassi.

He's afraid of spiders.
7. Some of these are so funny. Of what is famous country and western singer and actor Lyle Lovett afraid?

Answer: Cows

Isn't that hilarious? A country and western singer afraid of cows. I burst out laughing. Lovett, who was very briefly married to actress Julia Roberts, has been around since 1980, and has recorded at least thirteen albums and twenty-one singles. He's won four Grammy awards, Best Male Country Performance and Best Country Album. Comically, his most popular single was, of all things, "Cowboy Man" - and that ain't no moo, listeners.

In 2002 he was rammed against a fence by a bull on his uncle's farm, but one wonders if the accident created the phobia, or if the phobia created the accident? After all, there is an old belief floating around somewhere that says "What we fear most we create."
8. World-famous football player David Beckham has a fear of what?

Answer: Disorder

What can we say about David Beckham and his wife Victoria "Posh" Beckham that hasn't already been splurged across the pages of every tabloid in every country of the world - none of which I find interesting incidentally, except the work he does for charities throughout the world is indeed very admirable. To find out that he has a phobia is akin to finding out that a god is a mere mortal after all.

This fear of disorder or mess is known as ataxophobia, or a fear of chaos. Beckham's perpetually pouting wife said of her husband's little hiccup that "Everything has to match in the house. If there are three cans of Diet Coke, he'd throw one away rather than have three, because it's uneven". Ian Denyar, who made a documentary about the player in 2002, would agree with that diagnosis.

He said of Beckham that even "the DVD player had to be parallel to the edge of the table".
9. Talk show hostess, producer and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey has a sticky phobia about what?

Answer: Chewing gum

Well, she'll never chew it for sure. It'd take time away from her constant screaming and shrieking and non-stop talking. However, I'd better be kind. Ms Winfrey doesn't just suffer from continual and noisy yammering. She's done an astonishing amount of charitable work right around the world, and for that I have the utmost admiration - and for the fact that she dragged herself up from the lowest socio-economic structures of society to be one of the most influential women in the world. One of her charity networks alone has raised more than $80,000,000 and that's pretty wonderful. So, in spite of my dislike for her particular style of entertainment, she's one amazing woman. Just don't chew gum around her, or be seen chewing it in her presence, that's all.

She can't stand it. Oprah is said to be much quieter in her private life than her television persona. Well, thank God for that.
10. Another really comical one to finish off with. Whenever he's around them, actor Roger Moore has such a phobia about what objects that he goes into nervous tics and spasms?

Answer: Guns

I think that's killingly funny, if you'll pardon the pun. Moore actually starts to compulsively blink and twitch if he even has to pick a gun up. To think he played James Bond in a series of the Bond films movies made between 1973 to 1985, and Simon Templar in a long running TV series "The Saint"" - and you know what those shows entail. Guns, guns and nothing but guns. Well unless you don't count the bombs and the rockets that is. Moore is another of the big name stars who has carried out a vast amount of charity work during his life. For this he was awarded a CBE and a KBE from Britain, and has said that he values those two awards far more for his charity work than if he had received them for his acting. Well, now you know why. Charity work doesn't involve having to pull a trigger.
