Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. British 50 pence coin

Answer: Heptagon

A heptagon is a seven-sided polygon and is quite rare with items created by humans or those found naturally. In addition to the British 50p coin, other coins in the shape of a heptagon include the Barbados dollar, several Botswana pula denominations and the 1000 Kwacha of Zambia.
2. Chevrolet logo

Answer: Dodecagon

A dodecagon is any 12-sided polygon. A regular dodecagon has all sides of the same length and internal angles of 150°. Other examples of dodecagons include a cross and the Torre del Oro watchtower in Seville, Spain.
3. Home plate on a baseball field

Answer: Pentagon

Pentagons are five-sided polygons and similarly a five-pointed star drawn as a continuous line with five straight segments is known as a pentagram. Animals such as the starfish, flowers like the morning glory and the cross-section of okra all have a pentagonal shape or five-part radial symmetry.

Not surprisingly, the massive building known as the Pentagon in Washington, DC is also in the shape of a pentagon.
4. Doritos

Answer: Triangle

Triangular Doritos are chips produced by Frito-Lay since 1964 in a wide variety of flavors. The triangle is a three-sided shape with different names depending on the relative length of sides and interior angles. A regular triangle has all angles of 60° but possibly just as common is a right triangle that has a 90° angle.

Other examples of triangles include a slice of pizza, a clothes hanger and some road signs.
5. Baha'i House of Worship

Answer: Nonagon

Also known as an enneagon, a nonagon is a nine-sided figure. Abdu'l-Bahá was the head of the Baha'i faith from 1892 until his death in 1921 and he declared that all Baha'i Houses of Worship be in a circular shape with nine sides. In music the band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released an album titled "Nonagon Infinity" that featured a nonagon on the cover.
6. Sheet of paper

Answer: Quadrilateral

A quadrilateral is a four-sided polygon that includes shapes like the trapezoid, rectangle, rhombus and parallelogram. A regular quadrilateral is a square with four sides of equal length and interior angles of 90°. Examples of quadrilaterals include doors, laptops and cell phones.
7. Belize dollar coin

Answer: Decagon

A decagon is a ten-sided polygon. Since many items can be made to have a different number of sides it is difficult to state certain objects that are always decagons. Occasionally tiles and umbrellas are in the shape of decagons. In addition to the Belize dollar, a five dollar coin circulated in Hong Kong in the 1970s was in the shape of a decagon.
8. Stop sign

Answer: Octagon

The stop sign is likely the most well-known example of the eight-sided figure known as an octagon. Other examples include poker tables and the Dome of the Rock Islamic shrine in Jerusalem.
9. Honeycomb

Answer: Hexagon

A hexagon is a six-sided polygon with interior angles totaling 720°. The honey bee produces wax cells called honeycombs with numerous hexagons that contain larva, honey and pollen. Snowflakes also form in hexagonal shapes and Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park is in the shape of a hexagon.
10. Loonie (Canadian one dollar coin)

Answer: Hendecagon

A hendecagon is an 11-sided figure that can also be called an undecagon or an endecagon. The base of the Statue of Liberty is actually in the shape of an 11-point star. In addition to the Canadian loonie, the Indian two rupee and the United States Susan B. Anthony dollar are in the shape of or feature a hendecagon.
