Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Good morning! For those that prefer to wake with the smell of bacon, there's an alarm clock that will cook bacon. What name have the inventors given the clock?

Answer: Wake'n Bacon

The first version of the clock was created by Matty Sallin, Daniel Bartolin and Hsiao-huh Hsu. Version two was by Matty Sallin and engineered by Josh Meyer.

The pictures of their device look like a square wooden pig head. You would put in a piece of frozen bacon before going to sleep and rather than an audible alarm, the bacon would be cooked and the wafting aroma would then wake you. (NOTE: don't eat the bacon that's been in the clock all night!)
2. Time to get ready for your day. Can shower soap be made from the grease left behind after frying bacon?

Answer: Yes

There are many sets of instructions that can be found on the internet. Basically, you have to render the bacon which allows you to separate the bacon fat. A mixture of water and lye should be prepared and for adding to the cooling bacon fat. Then pour into a mold and let it set. Once set, it can be cut and must be left to dry for several weeks before it can be used.

If this has encouraged you to try to make your own bacon soap, please plan carefully. Lye is poisonous--it can burn your skin and the fumes should not be breathed. All of the tools used to make your own soap should never be used for food.
3. Um, still getting ready for the day. Just in case you don't have time for bacon at breakfast, your morning hygiene could include bacon toothpaste and bacon floss. I was excited when I saw there was also bacon mouthwash, but it turned out to be an April Fool's prank. In 2013, which of these companies posted the prank?

Answer: Scope

The product was posted in March 2013, and on April 1, it was updated to show that it was an April Fool's prank. They posted the following "Thanks for helping us find the courage to laugh at ourselves. Now, wash that bacon taste away with one of our minty fresh flavors".
4. Almost ready to head out, you just need to daub on some scent. John Leydon founded Fargginay, Inc., to re-create a recipe for bacon cologne that was lost in a 1924 fire. Which of these two scents did they market in 2011?

Answer: Bacon Classic/Bacon Gold

The fragrance is named bacôn (pronounced "bay-cone"). The Bacon Classic scent is purported to smell of maple and bacon, while the Bacon Gold smells of citrus and bacon. Their story claims that the original scent was created in 1920 by Parisian butcher John Fargginay, but was lost in a fire.

For those that might want the fragrance but not on their person, air fresheners and Boss Hog's Bacon Fragrance Spray are also available.
5. Time now to drive to work in your new car. In celebration of International Bacon Day on August 31, 2013, which model Ford was introduced as a bacon-wrapped car?

Answer: Fiesta

Apparently you can have the car customized in several different ways. Options are ten giant strips around the Fiesta, racing strips for the hood, or a side of bacon--strips over the rear wheel.

International Bacon Day, only recognized by true aficionados, is celebrated on the Saturday before Labor Day in the U.S. Its blog has claimed that the day is for everyone; even vegetarians can have non-meat bacon.
6. Now imagine Tom: he's going to an interview and is all decked out with bacon tie, cuff-links and shoes. Just to make sure they get the point, in what does he carry his resume?

Answer: bacon briefcase

Pictures of the bacon briefcase can be found on many internet sites, but I couldn't actually find anyone who would sell you one, just a lot of folk who wanted to talk about it!

There are also bacon wallets, pumps, sneakers, socks, scarves, earrings, bracelets, hair clips, cuff links, belts, gloves, and many bacon t-shirts!
7. How about a job that includes bacon? Which of these artists has used food, including bacon, to create "foodscapes" (photographs that appear to be landscapes, but are made of food)?

Answer: Carl Warner

Photographer Carl Warner was in a career slump and looking for a new outlet for his talent when he was inspired by portabello mushrooms found in a food market. He used them to create a scene from an alien world in his studio. He named his first foodscape "The Mushroom Savanna".

Jennifer Maestre creates sculptures from colored pencils. Guido Daniele is a bodypainter, creating 3-D pictures on human hands. George Vlosich III creates his art on an Etch-A-Sketch.
8. Planning for the future? For those that just can't get enough bacon, which of these companies started advertising a bacon coffin in 2012?

Answer: J&D Foods

J&D Foods got their start up capital from "America's Funniest Home Videos". The $5,000 clip showed Dave's son batting wiffle balls. Their first product was Bacon Salt, and they have since created many bacon flavored items as well as many novelty gifts.

The coffin product was reported on several sites, and several speculated that it might be an April Fool's prank, but more than a year later, the product was still offered on their website. My favorite part of the description is: "No returns accepted".
9. Ah, home now. Time to relax with a game. Which of these board games has bacon pieces racing through Meatland?

Answer: Mr. Bacon's Big Adventure

Archie McPhee first published the game in 2009. "Mr. Bacon's Big Adventure" takes Mr. Bacon on a journey to the Great Frying Pan. During the journey Mr. Bacon can pass through Mustard Marsh, Sausage Sea, Vegan Alley and other foodie locations.

For two to four players, the game comes with board, spinner, player pieces and cards.
10. And to top off the day, how about that drink? Which of these alcoholic drinks is flavored to taste of bacon?

Answer: Bakon Vodka

The Bakon Vodka is a trademark of Black Rock Spirits, LLC. They claim that throughout their testing the goal was to create the "essence of a delicious crisp slice of peppered-bacon".

In 2010, Jones Bacon Soda was made in a collaboration of Jones Soda Co., and J&D Foods. It was only produced for a limited time. If you still want to try a bacon flavored soda (though the reviews are not all great), you can still get Lester's Fixins Bacon Soda from several websites.

As if these were not enough, the Effervescent Bacon Drink Tabs can be used to flavor water, milk, juice, or any other liquid that might really need a bacon flavor!
