Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This fruit is part of the title of a well-known movie starring the great Henry Fonda. Which is it?

Answer: grapes

"The Grapes of Wrath" is a monumental work, written by John Steinbeck, about the dust bowl refugees moving to California. A young Henry Fonda played the lead character in the film version.
2. In the late 1960s, labor organizer Cesar Chavez, called for a boycott of this fruit. What was it?

Answer: grapes

In his effort to organize migrant farm workers in California, Chavez called on all Americans to boycott grapes. For several years, the union symbol and "Boycott Grapes" were seen on the bumpers of Volvos across the nation.
3. Back in the early '70s, singer/entertainer Anita Bryant shilled for this fruit product. What was it?

Answer: orange juice

Bryant had a good thing going until she made several controversial remarks about gays and lesbians. The furor caused the orange growers to dump her as their spokesperson.
4. Everybody knows that toward the end of their career as a quartet, The Beatles founded Apple Records. What color is the Apple Records logo?

Answer: green

They were great songwriters and pretty good musicians, but they were also terrible businessmen. Along with other pressures (Yoko, George's lack of exposure on the group's albums, etc.), the founding of their own record label contributed to the break up of the Fab Four.
5. From the annals of American slang, if someone refers to a car as "cherry", what is she saying about the vehicle?

Answer: it's in perfect condition

A cherry ride usually refers to an older, perhaps restored, vehicle. To qualify as cherry, the restoration has to be perfect.
6. This political leader was nicknamed "The Pineapple" by those who sought his downfall. Who had this most unfortunate nickname?

Answer: Manuel Noriega

The reference was to Noriega's pock-marked complexion. Trafficking in drugs and basically being a thorn in America's side, the dictator was airlifted out of the country to the US where he was tried and locked up in a Federal facility.
7. Donovan, "Britain's answer to Bob Dylan", had a hit that mentioned this fruit. What was it?

Answer: banana

In "Mellow Yellow", one of Donovan's bigger hits, he mentions an "electrical banana" which he calls Mellow Yellow.
8. Tom Wolfe's first book, published in 1965, has a fruit in its title. Which fruit is it?

Answer: tangerine

Wolfe is credited by some with the invention of the "new journalism" movement, in part because of this book called "The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby" about the world of hot rodders and car fanatics.
9. Touted by Thomas Jefferson, this member of the nightshade family was once considered poisonous. Which fruit is it?

Answer: tomato

Because the tomato plant is closely related to the deadly nightshade, it was considered poisonous. Jefferson advocated the growing of this fruit and demonstrations in public squares of men eating a tomato actually caused women to swoon. PS, the tomato is a fruit and women no longer swoon.
10. Johnny Appleseed is an American folk hero who went about the midwest planting apple seeds that eventually grew into orchards. What was Mr. Appleseed's real name?

Answer: John Chapman

From the Boston area, John Chapman got tired of crowded city living so he took off for the frontier, which at that time was around present day Ohio. Actually, he was a recluse who didn't have much use for other people, unlike the happy-go-lucky figure, wearing a cooking pot for a hat, that we all learned about in school.
