Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Disney has been producing wonderful feature-length animated movies since 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", but it wasn't until the 1992 Academy Awards that a Disney animated movie was nominated for Best Picture. Which film?

Answer: Beauty and the Beast

"Beauty and the Beast" (1991) received a total of six Oscar nominations at the 64th Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Score (Alan Menken) and Best Song ("Beauty and the Beast" by Menken and Howard Ashman).

Since that landmark first time nomination for Best Picture, there have been two more animated features that have received the nomination: 2009's "Up" and 2010's "Toy Story 3". Neither won.

3. Swan, Panther, and Cat are just a few animals appearing in film titles preceded by what adjective?

Answer: Black

And interestingly, all three movies seem to minimize actual animals. "Black Swan" was the 2010 Darren Aronofsky film that brought Natalie Portman a Best Actress Oscar win. It was about ballet. "Black Panther" was the 2018 Marvel film based on the comic book series of the same name (which was also nominated for an Oscar, but for Best Picture). "The Black Cat" was a 1981 Italian horror film based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story. That's the one that featured an animal more than others. Other black animal films include "Black Stallion", "Black Sheep", and "Black Scorpion".

4. Which modern day financial capital was once part of the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza's wedding dowry?

Answer: Bombay (now Mumbai)

Bombay (renamed Mumbai in 1995) is considered the financial capital of India. The city was originally a group of seven islands that eventually came under the control of the Portuguese Empire. Through being part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry on her marriage to Charles II of England, the islands became a part of the British Empire. They were then handed over to the East India Company when it began to set up trade relationships with India. Its advantageous position on the western coast of India contributed to its elevation as a major seaport and trade centre. As the commercial capital of India, it is home to the headquarters of various conglomerates and banks along with housing the Reserve Bank of India and Bombay Stock Exchange, one of the oldest stock exchanges in Asia.

5. If you've ever shared a household with someone who was learning to play the piano, you are probably familiar with the piece titled "Für Elise". Who composed "Für Elise"?

Answer: Beethoven

Formally known as "Bagatelle No. 25 in A Minor", this solo piece for piano is one of Beethoven's most familiar and popular works, despite the fact that it was not published during his lifetime. Ludwig Nohl discovered the original manuscript in 1867, forty years after the composer's death. The manuscript, dated 27 April 1810, had a dedication which has led to its popular title, and much time has been spent speculating over the possible identity of Elise. The two leading candidates are Therese Malfati (with a slight transcription error by Nohl giving Elise instead of Therese), a student of Beethoven's who is believed to have turned down an 1810 marriage proposal from the composer before marrying an Austrian diplomat; and Elisabeth Röckel, a young singer with whom he was also said to have been romantically interested before her move to Paris in 1810.

The opening bars, played with the right hand only, make an easy little riff: E-D sharp-E-D sharp-E-B-D-C-A. Go on, play it - you know you want to, and you'll almost certainly recall having heard it before!

6. Let's change from the sublime to the ridiculous. What cartoon features Bugs Bunny singing operatic pieces from a barber shop?

Answer: Rabbit of Seville

Classical music got a fresh audience when selections appeared in Looney Tunes cartoons during the middle of the 20th century. "Rabbit of Seville", which was first released in December of 1950, started with Bugs and Elmer Fudd finding themselves onstage at the Hollywood Bowl during a performance of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville", whereupon their frenetic contest is continued as they also participate in the show. Most of their song snippets come from the overture to this 1816 opera.

"What's Opera, Doc" featured music from Wagner's "Ring Cycle", "Baton Bunny" had Bugs conducting the overture to "A Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna" by Franz von Suppé, while "Bugs Bunny Rides Again" once again used a piece from Rossini, 'The William Tell Overture". Rossini seems to have had a particular appeal to the creative minds at Looney Tunes, as more music from "The Barber of Seville" was used in the 1949 cartoon "The Long-Haired Hare".

7. In 1930, two men named Beebe and Barton squeezed themselves through a tiny hatch into a 60 inch diameter metal sphere, and made the then deepest ocean dive ever. What did they call their wonderful contraption?

Answer: Bathysphere

William Beebe and Otis Barton saw many wonders as they descended into the depths off the Bahamas. They also broadcast live via radio from 1500 feet down on a subsequent dive the following year.

Beebe's notes were used by artist Else Bostelman to make a series of painted illustrations for National Geographic magazine, showing previously unknown species of sea creatures.

8. The relatively recent Baha'i Faith began as an offshoot of which major world religion?

Answer: Islam

The Baha'i Faith was founded in Iran (Persia) in the 19th century. Bab, one of the central figures of the religion, was an Iranian merchant who developed and preached a new interpretation of the Islamic faith followed by the Shia sect. This was not found acceptable to the Islamic clergy who deemed his preaching blasphemous and had him publicly executed. The faith was then carried forward by the Bahá'u'lláh.

9. What word is used to describe an Italian vinegar made with grape must?

Answer: Balsamic

While one may think that balsamic vinegar has something-- ANYTHING-- to do with balsam, it really doesn't. Balsamic vinegar is named as such because it was believed to have curative capabilities. To make this product you need to take crushed white grapes and age the vinegar with this byproduct for years (usually more than a dozen) to give the liquid a more intense flavour. Balsamic vinegar originated in Central Italy and is typically used with oil as a salad dressing or as a flavour enhancer for certain dishes.

10. Not exactly Satan, nor a god of the Philistines, the Baalzebub is a genus of creature that *could* be called the 'Lord of the Flies'. What is it?

Answer: A spider

Baalzebub is a genus of ray spider with seven extant species (as of 2020), originally described by Jonathan A. Coddington in 1986. Ray spiders are largely known for their funnel-shaped webs, and Baalzebub spiders in particular are known to like dark places, such as caves, to spin their webs.
