Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Named as one of the ten most haunted places in America, the Lemp Mansion is located in which of the following cities in Missouri?

Answer: St. Louis

An immigrant from Eschwege, Germany, Johann Adam Lemp arrived in St. Louis in 1838. With his own grocery store, he sold your average household items, groceries and his homemade vinegar and lager beer. Realizing he made more money selling the beer, he gave up the grocery store and began focusing on making a fortune selling his lager. In 1840, he built Lemp's Western Brewery Co.
Needless to say, when Johann died on August 25, 1862, he was a millionaire and his funeral consisted of 30 horse-drawn carriages.
2. Which member of the Lemp family was the first to commit suicide?

Answer: William Sr.

William J. Lemp was born in Germany in 1836. He took over the brewery after his father's death and it soon became the largest brewery in St. Louis as well as the largest single owner brewery outside of New York.
In 1892, the William J. Lemp Brewing Co. was founded.
William's fourth born son, Frederick, was his father's favorite as well as the heir to the family's fortune, but unbeknown to the family, Frederick had serious health issues and died on December 21, 1901. He was 28 years old. Some say William Sr. never fully recovered from his son's death, and on February 13, 1904, he took a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and shot himself in the head in his upstairs bedroom and died at about 10:15am.
3. Which Lemp family member committed suicide in 1920? (It was the second suicide committed by a Lemp family member.)

Answer: Elsa

The youngest of the Lemp children and considered to be the wealthiest heiress in St. Louis, Elsa, married Thomas Wright in 1910. After going through a troubled marriage, Elsa filed for divorce in February of 1919. The divorce was granted, but the couple reconciled and remarried in March of 1920. Later that month, on March 20, suffering from insomnia and depressed over her still rocky marriage, Elsa shot herself in the heart while in bed at their home.
4. Was William 'Billy' Lemp Jr. the third suicide committed in the Lemp family?

Answer: Yes

When Prohibition began in 1919, no one in the Lemp family had much interest in keeping the brewery open and instead of continuing with the success of the brewery, William 'Billy' Jr., simply let it decline and closed its doors. Prior to Prohibition, the brewery buildings were estimated to be worth $7 million but were sold for a mere $588,000 to the International Shoe Co.
This caused a major blow to Billy's behavior and soon he was acting the same way his father acted before he committed suicide, and on December 29, 1922, Billy shot himself in the heart inside his office.
5. Who is the only family member to have left a suicide note?

Answer: Charles

Charles Lemp was the third child born to William Sr. and Julia. He remodeled the mansion and lived there long after his brother's suicide. An extremely bitter man, Charles led basically a hermit's life and on May 10, 1949, he was found by Edwin with a note that read: "In case I am found dead, blame it on no one but me. Ch. A. Lemp".
6. Of the following choices, which member of the Lemp family died in 1970 of 'natural causes'?

Answer: Edwin Lemp

Edwin Lemp was 90 when he died in 1970 of 'natural causes'. Billy's son, William Lemp III, was forty-two when he died of a heart attack in 1943. (Louis Lemp, the second oldest son of William Sr., also died of natural causes in 1931.)
7. In which part of the mansion is it said that William's illegitimate son haunts?

Answer: the attic

According to legend, William Lemp Jr.'s womanizing ways caught up with him when one of his 'prospects' had a son. Born with Down Syndrome, he'd been dubbed with the name, 'Monkey Face Boy'. History says he was kept locked up and hidden away in the attic.
The face of a child has been said to be seen peeking out from the attic window and investigators have left toys inside his room with a circle drawn around them only to discover the next day the toys have been moved. Some people claim to have heard him say, 'Come play with me.'
8. When it was turned into a bed and breakfast, for a small price, you could buy yourself an overnight stay and maybe "meet" a Lemp family member or two! Was the quote, "Spend the Night Where Beer Barons Slept", used as one of the advertisements for an overnight stay?

Answer: Yes

In 1975, the Lemp Mansion was purchased by Dick Pointer and remodeled it into the restaurant and inn. During remodeling, workers reported missing tools, strange sounds and uneasy feelings. Other strange occurrences that have been reported are, the chandeliers sway, footsteps are heard throughout the mansion, a barber chair moving by itself and a 'sense' of being watched.
9. There are a few suites to choose from if you decide to spend the night at the Lemp Mansion. Is one of the suites called 'The Lavender Suite'?

Answer: Yes

The suite known as 'The Lavender Suite' consists of a breakfast room, a bedroom and a bathroom. It's named after Lillian Lemp (née Handlan), also known as the 'Lavender Lady', (due to the fact she was known to always wear this color). The other suites located in the mansion are named, 'The Elsa Lemp Suite', 'The William Lemp Suite', 'The Charles Lemp Suite' and 'The Louis and Frederick Suites'.
Besides ghosts, the Lemp mansion has offered other accommodations such as weddings and receptions, a 'Murder Mystery Theater' and Halloween Parties and on Mondays, haunted tours!
10. Which U.S. cable television network used the tunnels below the mansion as part of their reality show about haunted places in 2002?

Answer: MTV

In 2002, MTV took their show "Fear" to the tunnels under the Lemp mansion, though it was given the fake name of the 'Boettger Brewery'. It was the sixth episode of the second season. "Fear" consisted of five or more contestants being blindfolded and placed in an allegedly haunted location.

The contestants were then randomly selected to complete a series of dares over two nights to find out if the place was truly haunted. Those who completed the tasks and 'survived' until the end, were given $5,000.
