The Aurora Borealis is a broad display of rather faint light in the northern skies at night. The sun produces a stream of charged particles, called the solar wind. Some of these particles are trapped by the Earth's magnetic field and form along the lines of magnetic flux.

These lines all converge at the north and south poles which concentrate the particles. At that point, collisions between these particles and the atoms in the atmosphere result in the glow we call the Northern Lights. The same thing occurs at the south pole which is called the Aurora Australis.

Maya Angelou, born April 4, 1928 as Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, was raised in segregated rural Arkansas. She is a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She lectures throughout the US and abroad and is Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in North Carolina since 1981.

She has published ten best selling books and numerous magazine articles earning her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations. At the request of President Clinton, she wrote and delivered a poem at his 1993 presidential inauguration.
