1910-2000 City Population Changes Quiz

When I was 14, or so, I went into a used bookstore and bought a 1913 edition of Rand McNally & Co.'s New Census Atlas of the World. It cost $1.50 and I still have it. I have always loved geography and wound up getting my A.B. in it.

This is where I lived for 39 years before moving to Denton, TX. I had no idea it was so small. But this for the city, only. When asked, we always said 35,000 - which was the population of the whole county. Incidentally, in area Okeechobee County is four times the size of the country of Andorra.

Denton is where I live now. I guess back in 1910 there were more horses and cattle than people.

Strangely, Philadelphia lost population. Philly is where I was born and raised. I lived there through my twenties. A few vacations in Florida, however, made me pack and move. I ended up at the University of Miami. That's why I go by HurricaneBill.

Quoting Wikipedia, "In the 1920s, the motion picture and aviation industries flocked to Los Angeles, with continuing growth ensuring that the city suffered less during the Great Depression. In 1932, with population surpassing one million, the city hosted the Summer Olympics." Later, industry and education boomed to make LA more than ten times bigger than it was in 1910.
8. The Big Apple. The host city of the United Nations. Anything and everything may be found in this most populous city in the USA. Going by the 2000 census New York City had 8,391,881 people. What was the population in 1910?

The population of New York City almost doubled over 100 years. It was flooded with European immigrants and African-Americans moving from the south. If you've never been there, be assured that it's a sight to behold.
9. Seattle: the northernmost major city in the contiguous United States. According to the 2000 census Seattle, WA was 617,334. What was the population in 1910?

Shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing through two world wars led to a boom in Seattle. Much later Starbucks became a major player.
10. Dallas, TX, is the home of several Fortune 500 companies and a major air hub in the southwest. In 2000 the population of Dallas was 1,299,543. What was the population in 1910?

Answer: 92,104

More than a tenfold increase. In 1910 there were still shoot-outs and necktie parties in northern Texas. Now, this city is gleaming glass and steel skyscrapers.
11. Leaving the United States we go to Europe and Berlin, Germany. Berlin is the largest city and capital of Germany. The 2000 census put the population of this city at 3,500,000. What was the population in 1910?

Answer: 2,070,695

I'm surprised that Berlin was so big in 1910 and actually gained a large number of people despite its loss of many young men in WWI, the slaughter of many thousands of Jews by the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s and Allied bombing in WWII, which killed more than 100,000 civilians.
12. Leaving Europe and going to Asia we come to the city of Tokyo, Japan. The 2000 census places the population of Tokyo at 8,887,608. What was the population in 1910?

Answer: 2,186,079

The recovery of Tokyo from WWII firebombing is amazing. In just one night in March, 1945, 335 American B-29s dropped around 1,700 tons of bombs. As a result, approximately 16 square miles (41 kmē) of the city were destroyed and some 100,000 people are estimated to have died. This was more than the immediate deaths caused by either the Hiroshima or Nagasaki atomic bombs.
13. Also in Asia is the city of Shanghai, China, which is the most populous city in the world. The 2000 census puts the population at 13,831,900. What was the population in 1910?

Answer: 651,000

Shanghai did not come into its own until the 1920s and 1930s when White Russians and Russian Jews and later European Jews fled to Shanghai to escape from Hitler and Stalin. It then became a truly international city and began to grow by leaps and bounds. By 2000 this amounted to a twenty-fold growth.
14. The most populous city in India and the second most populous in the world is Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. The 2000 census puts its population at 13,830,884. What was the population in 1910?

Answer: 979,445

In 1910 Bombay, as it was known, was fourteen times smaller than it was in 2000. A reason why it was so small in 1910 may have been the bubonic plague outbreak in 1896 when 1900 people died every day. This also caused almost a million people to flee.
15. And the capital of England and its largest city is London which, according to the 2000 census, was home to 7,566,900 people. What was the population in 1910?

Answer: 4,522,961

London was the world's most populous city in 1910 and it suffered from disease and other problems associated with overcrowding. And, in 1940 it endured the German bombing which was referred to as "the blitz". Thousands of people were killed and tracts of homes were destroyed. This was seemingly shrugged off by the plucky Londoners and, after the war, it grew to what it is today.
