Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start at the beginning. What is the Welsh name for Pembrokeshire?

Answer: Sir Benfro

The Welsh language is not really my strong point, I am ashamed to admit - if anyone would like to teach me, then please feel free. The little I do know was picked up from road signs mainly: araf is slow, ysgol is school, fford is road, and dim parcio is no parking. I am reliably informed that Benfro is translated as Land's End, whilst Sir mean Shire.
2. The summit of Carn Menyn in the Preseli Hills is famous as being the source of what?

Answer: The bluestones at Stonehenge

The Preseli Hills are in north Pembrokeshire and are full of prehistoric remains including stone circles, cairns and settlements. The bluestones, which form the inner circle at Stonehenge, have been matched chemically to the rocky outcrop of Carn Meyni.
3. Pembrokeshire has many castles, but which one was the birthplace of the future Henry VII?

Answer: Pembroke

Born Henry Tudor in 1457, he amassed an army in France which landed at Mill Bay in Pembrokeshire. He eventually fought Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth claiming victory and the crown of England in 1485.
4. The settlement known as Tyddewi to the locals is the smallest city in Britain. What do the rest of us know it as?

Answer: St David's

The city was founded in 550 CE and grew up around the cathedral of St David. It is the ecclesiastical capital of Wales and the only city in Britain to lie wholly within a national park.
5. Why is the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park unique in Britain?

Answer: It is the only coastal national park

Created in 1952 purely due to its spectacular coastline, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is one of three in Wales and contains the Preseli Mountains. It is also the only national park to have a city wholly within it.
6. What is the county town of Pembrokeshire?

Answer: Haverfordwest

It seems as though every road in Pembrokeshire leads to Haverfordwest. It is the county town and administrative centre, as well as being the most populous urban area in the county. It has an impressive 12th century castle and modern archaeological finds suggest a Roman origin.
7. The 186-mile long Pembrokeshire Coast National Trail starts and finishes at which two points?

Answer: Poppit Sands and Amroth

The coast path is one of Britain's 14 national trails. It was established in 1970 and runs from Poppit Sands (which is actually in neighbouring Cardiganshire) to Amroth. If you walk the entire length, then you will climb over 35,000 feet which is actually higher than the height of Everest.
8. The last invasion of Britain was in 1797 when 1,400 French soldiers landed near which Pembrokeshire town?

Answer: Fishguard

Yes, its true! On 22nd of February 1797, a group of 1,400 French troops landed near Fishguard under the command of Irish American Colonel William Tate. By the 24th of February, most of the soldiers had either deserted or had been caught looting by the townspeople. The unconditional surrender was signed in the Royal Oak pub in the town square.
9. Which Pembrokeshire town has 13th century town walls which include a barbican known as the five arches? There is also a well-preserved Tudor merchant's house owned by the National Trust and an offshore island which houses a community of monks.

Answer: Tenby

Tenby is known as Dinbych-y-Pysgod, meaning little town of the fishes in Welsh. Portuguese sailors landed the first oranges to be brought to Wales at Tenby Harbour in 1566.
10. Which large natural harbour has been a royal dockyard and seen the departure of both Oliver Cromwell's and Henry II's invasions of Ireland?

Answer: Milford Haven

Milford Haven has been a port since the Middle Ages. The town itself was founded in 1790 by Sir William Hamilton (husband of Emma Hamilton who was lover of Admiral Nelson) to be a whaling port.
