Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Armagh city is in the middle of County Armagh, which lies where relative to Northern Ireland's central lake, Lough Neagh?

Answer: South

County Armagh is a fertile area known as the Orchard County, with South Armagh being one of Western Europe's most militarised zones during The Troubles of the 1970s to the 1990s.

Five of NI's six counties border Lough Neagh (pr Loch Nay). Anticlockwise from Armagh they are: Down, Antrim, Londonderry and Tyrone, with Fermanagh being the odd one out to the far west.
2. Armagh was made a city by a royal charter from Queen Elizabeth II in 1994. To the nearest thousand, what was its population at the next census in 2001?

Answer: 15,000

It was 14,590 to be exact. Although it is the county town of Armagh, it has a smaller population than Lurgan or Portadown, both of which have over 30,000 people.
3. What is usually claimed to be the origin of the name Armagh?

Answer: "Ard Macha", the hill of the Irish goddess Macha

For this reason, people from Armagh are sometimes called Armachians.
Incidentally, "Aon treabh", Irish for one house or family, is actually the probable origin of the name Antrim.
4. Ernst Opik, who worked at Armagh Observatory, postulated the existence of what is now called the Opik-Oort cloud, a belt of the Solar System beyond the known planets. From which country did Opik come?

Answer: Estonia

In 1932 he predicted that a cloud would be discovered beyond Pluto that was the source of comets. He moved to Armagh in 1948 and despite lucrative job offers from the US, remained there until his death in 1981. His grandson is fairly well-known in the UK as Liberal MP Lembit Opik.
5. Armagh Public Library contains a first edition of which famous novel, with notes written in the author's own handwriting?

Answer: "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift

The original title of this political satire when it was first published anonymously in 1725 was the less snappy "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships". By 1726, John Gay reported that it was "universally read from the cabinet council to the nursery" and since then, the book that gave us the words Lilliputian and yahoos has never been out of print.
6. The Anglican and Roman Catholic Archbishops of Armagh both claim which title?

Answer: Primate of All Ireland

The Anglican Archbishop is head of the Church of Ireland which, in 1534, followed Henry VIII's lead in splitting from the Roman Catholic church. The majority of the population continued to follow Catholicism, so the city has two Archbishops, both of which call themselves Primate of All Ireland.

The second highest position in both denominations is Primate of Ireland, held by the bishops of Dublin.
7. Just outside Armagh is a stone commemorating "Red" Joe McVeigh for his feats in which sport, associated with the area?

Answer: Road bowling

Irish road bowling involves throwing a 28 ounce iron ball along a country course with the fewest shots winning, and takes place mostly in County Armagh and County Cork. Hurling is a fast Irish stick and ball game with carnogie being its women's equivalent.

The dominant sport in Armagh is Gaelic Football, a 15-a-side game played with a round ball that is smaller but heavier than a football. In 2002, Armagh won the All-Ireland Championship.
8. Next to the Armagh Observatory and the Armagh Planetarium, whose construction was overseen by Sir Patrick Moore, is the Astropark. Which has NOT been a feature of Armagh Astropark?

Answer: The Cosmo-sphere

The Solar System is a set of steel spheres made to show the relative sizes of the planets while the Hyper-cube and Hill of Infinity are interactive displays to show the vast scale of the universe. Armagh Planetarium was the world's first to project video onto its dome.
9. Lord Castlereagh, who studied at the Royal School in Armagh, held which position in the UK government from 1812 to 1822?

Answer: Foreign Secretary

Lord Castlereagh, born Robert Stewart, pushed through the 1800 Act of Union that joined Britain and Ireland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He also represented Britain at the Congress of Vienna, where he pushed for a system of international collaboration now seen in organisations such as the EU, NATO and the UN.

Other famous Armachians include newsreader and quiz host Dermot Murnaghan and former Northern Irish First Minister, the Reverend Ian Paisley.
10. The first part of the 9th century Book of Armagh contains writings relating to which legendary figure, said to have been born Maewyn Succat?

Answer: St Patrick

St Patrick is said to have made Armagh his see which is why the city's Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals are both called St Patrick's. Thus it is the world's only city with two cathedrals that have the same name. The Roman Catholic cathedral is also unusual in that the top and bottom halves are built in different architectural styles.

Hope you enjoyed that. Now Armagh getting outta here!
