Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Toronto can be found on the banks of one of the five Great Lakes. From the top of the CN Tower in Toronto you can see a fine view of the city of Toronto to the North and of the lake to the South. On which lake is Toronto found?

Answer: Lake Ontario

The word 'Toronto' means 'meeting place' in the native American dialect of the Huron tribe.
2. The top of the CN Tower is 1815 feet, 5 inches tall. What does the 'CN' stand for in CN Tower?

Answer: Canadian National

Part of the observation deck of the Tower is made of see-through glass. Standing on top of the glass and looking down gives one the impression of floating in space. The high-speed elevator takes 58 seconds to bring visitors to the observation deck. It was the tallest building in the world when it was built in 1976 and has remained so until today (2006).
3. The ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) in Toronto has a fine collection of Native American art and artifacts, ancient and modern. A remarkable collection of totem poles includes an 80 foot (24.5 meters) tall pole of the Nisga'a tribe. What is the pole made of?

Answer: A single giant western red cedar

The Nisga'a and Haida tribes of the North West created many totem poles, many of which are carved with figures that tell stories or legends. The 80 foot Nisga'a pole was build in 1870 in the village of Gitiks on the Nass River in British Columbia. The pole belonged to the Nisga'a Eagle chief, Sagawen. It is carved with numerous animals including an eagle at the very top.
4. The Royal Ontario Museum has a remarkable collection of Native American clothing and costume. Some of the northern most tribes needed to dress against extreme cold. What were their clothes made of?

Answer: Seal Skin in the summer, Caribou and Polar Bear in the winter

The Natives also used wool from the indigenous mountain goats. The wool had to be hand-spun by the women in a long process consisting of rolling it on one's leg.
5. The Native Americans of Canada frequented the many lakes and rivers with canoes in the lower latitudes and kayaks in the northern latitudes. In the ROM museum one can see many examples of Indian canoes and kayaks. What is a difference between a canoe and a kayak?

Answer: A canoe is made of wood inside and out and could hold several passengers. A kayak is made of a wooden frame covered with airtight sealskins, and usually held only one passenger.

A typical canoe was made of birch bark on the outside, and cedar wood inside, and then sealed with spruce gum and pine gum mixed with fat.
A kayak was made water proof but if it was over used, say for four straight days in a row, it was in danger of becoming soggy and splitting. It would then be removed and dried out before being used again. There are other differences, including paddling methods.
6. The Royal Ontario Museum also has a fine collection of European art, furniture, and armor, as well as Asian art. There is also section dedicated to natural history and fossils. The collection of stuffed birds is excellent including one of a Kiwi. Which statement about the Kiwi, a bird native to New Zealand, is true?

Answer: They have the largest egg to body ratio of any bird. They mate for life

Kiwis are considered 'primitive' in terms of there biological development. They do have an excellent sense of smell. They are flightless birds. Another flightless bird in the museum's collection is the excellent swimmer, the penguin. A penguin can remain underwater for 18 minutes.

8. The Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto houses a number of works by the Canadian artist Paul Peel (1860-1892). Which statement best describes his painting, "After the Bath"?

Answer: Two children, warming by a fire

Peel's great distinction was his uncanny ability to capture a subject's sense of chill, or warmth and impart that to the viewer. In his other masterpiece in the AGO museum, "The Shepherdess" one can feel the icy stream and shiver as the young girl dips her foot into the water. It is a pity this artist died at the tender age of 32.
