Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The village of Nesscliffe stands on the A5 main road. This largely follows Watling Street, a Roman road that originally ran from Viroconium (Wroxeter) to end down in which city?

Answer: Londinium (London)

The Romans were famous for their straight roads although Nesscliffe itself was on a rather dangerous bend. We once had three lorries overturn in one week, one flattening the local phone booth a minute after a local workman had just finished repairing the phone! Since a bypass opened the village has been a lot quieter.
2. In common with much of the stone in the area, the red sandstone from which Nesscliffe Hill's cliffs are made dates back to which geological period between the Permian and Jurassic ages?

Answer: Triassic

These cliffs, hidden round corners among trees and rhododendron bushes look quite impressive. I looked at one climbing website which graded them as F5 and F6, which I gather means very difficult to climb.
3. The woods of Nesscliffe Hill are home to Daubenton's, noctules and pipistrelles. These are all species of which animal?

Answer: Bat

Country wardens hang bat boxes in the trees and the local cave is closed off at certain times of the year while the bats roost. We had one fly into the Nesscliffe Hotel once and sleep hanging from a suitcase whose end protruded over the top of the wardrobe.
4. Nesscliffe Hill is most famous locally for its cave carved into the sandstone rock and situated up a flight of 32 worn stone steps. This was home to the 16th century outlaw Humphrey Kynaston. He was said to make spectacular leaps on a black horse with a devilish name heard in Bohemian Rhapsody and meaning Lord of the Flies. What was his horse called?

Answer: Beelzebub

The cave is in two sections with the left section said to be used for Kynaston's horse. If Beelzebub ever made its way up those narrow steps I'm impressed. Kynaston was also said to have shod the horse backwards to fool his pursuers.
5. The sandstone quarry on the hill was used by a famous engineer who built the Nesscliffe Hotel but more famously built the Caledonian Canal in Scotland. What was his name?

Answer: Thomas Telford

Anyone actually from the county of Shropshire should know this as one of the county's largest towns is called Telford in his honour. This Scotsman was nicknamed the Colossus of Roads for his work in road-building but also did work on various bridges, canals, etc.
6. Also on Nesscliffe Hill can be seen the remains of a hill fort. This is a typical site dating back to the ____ age.

Answer: Iron

The Iron Age in Britain is the name given to the period just before the Romans arrived when the people had moved on from bronze to smelting iron. They must have been quite busy as there are 51 known Iron Age hill forts in the county of Shropshire alone.
7. In 2002 a famous diner at The Olde Three Pigeons Inn in Nesscliffe was Sir Cliff Richard. Despite hundreds of UK hits since the 1950's his first US top ten hit was not until 1976. What was it?

Answer: Devil Woman

Ness-Cliff! A local petrol pump attendant embarrassed himself by not recognising Cliff at first. Incidentally, he had a fish course and, of course, enjoyed his meal.
8. Which film, largely shot in the fields outside Nesscliffe, starred John Cleese as a punctuality obsessed head teacher?

Answer: Clockwise

My little village's one brush with the movies and I was away at boarding school. When Cleese is talking to the man on a tractor, I still can't work out where that is exactly.
9. Nesscliffe Army Training Camp, England's Central Ammunition Storage Depot in World War II, has seen a good many Wessexes and Gazelles passing through. What are these?

Answer: Helicopters

Wessexes were green and Gazelles were red. That just about sums up my knowledge of helicopters. There seemed to be a number of large black helicopters flying to and from there during the Gulf War.
10. In January, 2003, there was a Nesscliffe fun run to open the new bypass. The race was led by Deborah Brennan who won one of Britain's 41 Paralympic golds in the Sydney Olympics. What was the only country that won more Paralympic golds in Sydney.

Answer: Australia

On that gloriously sunny day, a few of us ran, some went on micro-scooters, skateboards or roller skates but most of the 850 who took part walked and raised a good sum of money for the Hope House cancer charity. The A5 has been a lot quieter since but there is still plenty going on in the village. But I'll leave that for another quiz...
