Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Toronto used to be a group of smaller cities.

Answer: True

The cities of Etobicoke, York, East York, North York, and Scarborough were all part of Metropolitan Toronto.

The cities were amalgamated in 1996. Until then, only the downtown area was actually called Toronto.
2. What do Bloor Street, Danforth Avenue, Danforth Road, and McCowan Road all have in common?

Answer: They are all the same street

From the west, Bloor Street becomes Danforth Avenue at Broadview Ave. Danforth Ave becomes Danforth Rd just past Victoria Park Ave. At the intersection of Danforth and McCowan Roads, McCowan Rd takes over where Danforth leaves off.
3. In 2006, City Hall told which group of people to leave and never come back?

Answer: Guardian Angels

At the time, the Toronto government did not like the idea of the Guardian Angels watching over the city, although most residents felt otherwise. The Guardian Angels are a group of "community police". They originated in New York, but have branched out all across North America and Europe.
4. Which city located about an hour south-west of Toronto is often called Steeltown?

Answer: Hamilton

Hamilton lies on Lake Ontario. Steel mills around Hamilton produce over half of Canada's steel output leading to Hamilton's nickname of Steeltown.
5. Which one of these buildings is not directly connected to the PATH (Underground walkway)?

Answer: Casa Loma

The PATH connects much of central Toronto.
6. The former cities of East York and Scarborough were separated by what road?

Answer: Victoria Park Avenue

The west side of Victoria Park was East York, and the east side was Scarborough. Even after the two cities became part of Toronto, many residents still considered them separate.
7. A serious _______ occurred in 1995. It was the worst in Toronto history.

Answer: Subway crash

A speeding train crashed into the rear of another train waiting at a station. This happened right under the famous Casa Loma. The Toronto Transit Commission has since installed emergency stop rails throughout the system. These automatically stop a train if for some reason the train passes a red signal.
8. It is illegal to keep certain types of reptiles as pets in Toronto.

Answer: True

Any reptile that can grow to more than 2 meters (6 feet) in length cannot be kept as a pet anywhere within Toronto.
9. Which one of these Toronto communities is known for an exceptionally high crime rate?

Answer: Jane and Finch

For some reason there has always been a very high level of gang activity in this area. This is surprising, with a major university only a few blocks away.
10. Despite the fact that Toronto is the business capital of Canada, there are very few wealthy communities within the city limits.

Answer: True

Most Torontonians are middle class, with Liberal attitudes. Most of the richer people live in communities north of the city, such as Markham and Brampton. There are a few rich communities in the city, such as Rosedale and the Bridle Path, but most are working class.
11. Which of these office towers is the tallest?

Answer: First Canadian Place

First Canadian Place is home to the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Bank of Montreal tower. The Bank of Montreal tower has antennae on the roof, which makes it the tallest office tower. Without these, Scotia Plaza would be the tallest.
12. On what building would you find a giant neon weather station?

Answer: Canada Life Building

The Canada Life building used to be Toronto's tallest building. There is a weather indicator on the roof. This operates from six in the morning until midnight. The indicator will flash if a storm is approaching. Green means fair, red means rain, white means snow. Another indicator shows a drop or rise in temperature. The system is very accurate.
13. It is illegal to park in your driveway in Toronto.

Answer: True

Although not always enforced, you can not park in a driveway. If you have a garage, you must use it. If you don't, your vehicle must be well onto your own property. If someone complains, you will be ticketed if your vehicle is too close to the road or walkway.
14. Which of these parks is the largest?

Answer: High Park

High Park is modeled after Central Park (New York). It has tennis courts, a zoo, and a small lake.
15. Where would you find the Cinesphere?

Answer: Ontario Place

The Cinesphere is a giant IMAX theatre built right on Lake Ontario.
