Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first postcard came from South Africa from Anna. Was the southern edge of the African continent ever named the Cape of Storms?

Answer: Yes

The Portuguese explorer, Dias, while searching for a sea route to the Spice Islands, ran into a vicious storm and thought it was a most suitable name. When he returned to Portugal however, the King was overjoyed that such a milestone had been found. He re-named it the Cape of Good Hope. Everything depends on perspective.
2. My second postcard from John showed the world's highest sea cliffs, on which Hawaiian island did he spend his holidays?

Answer: Molokai

Thousands of years ago the northern edge of the island collapsed into the sea leaving these cliffs behind. They stretch along the Kalaupapa Peninsula, reaching up to 2000 feet. There is such a sad history here too as it was once a leper colony.
3. My third postcard had a UK stamp, it showed Wordsworth's cottage,(Marie likes to write), on the edge of which of these lakes?

Answer: Grasmere

This area is called the Lake District. Wordsworth's cottage is preserved. Coleridge and Southey also came to the district to be inspired. Remember "I wandered lonely as a cloud" etc. and all the parodies we wrote for the ending? Yes! thought that would bring a smile.
4. Now this looks familiar, Dun Aengus on the edge of the Aran Islands in Ireland. Is all the Dun/Fort still intact?

Answer: No

The fort consists of a portion of three mysterious concentric circles and is an example of a promontory fort used by ancient peoples. A third of each circle has fallen to the Atlantic 200 feet below. It is a wild terrifying place where you definitely need a head for heights.
5. "I've brought you a card from Elephant Island", Sharon said.I thought she had been to India, but I was wrong. Where is there another Elephant Island?

Answer: Antarctica

This island is named after elephant seals, not elephants, and lies off the edge of Antarctica. Some of Shackleton's fellow explorers were shipwrecked on the island in 1903. Sharon was on a cruise to Antarctica.
6. This US city is on the edge of the continent and owes its name to a saint from Assisi. (Jack spent six weeks there).

Answer: San Francisco

The city attracts 14 million visitors every year. Fisherman's Wharf is one of the thousands of attractions, who can resist good food, not Jack anyhow?
7. This postcard shows a volcano called Stromboli, and comes from Catherine. Will the stamp on the back be Italian?

Answer: Yes

Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It has been active for the last 2000 years. It usually emits gas and spurts of lava.
8. Dominic loves sport so his card showed a view of Chantilly in France. What sport is most associated with Chantilly?

Answer: Horse Racing

Chantilly is 45km. north of Paris and is renowned for its races. There is a 'Museum of the Living Horse' here. If you don't fancy a flutter then there is a chateau with one of the finest art collections in France.
9. Michael sent a view of a European city with an American University, an Irish College, Spanish Steps and a monument nicknamed the Wedding Cake. Where was he?

Answer: Rome

Michael was in Rome. What can be said about the Eternal City? Crossing the street can be a hair raising experience. I admire the courage of those young women who travel standing on scooters with their arms resting on the drivers' shoulders.
10. Now my turn came to send a postcard to each of my friends. I went on a walking holiday through the Field of Stars to the Cathedral of Saint James. Where did I go?

Answer: Spain

I went to Santiago de Compostella, in Spain. This is a medieval pilgrim road. After Jerusalem and Rome it was the most important pilgrimage site. Pilgrims carried either a real shell or a representation of one to say that they had been there.
