The Battle of the River Plate took place on 13 December, 1939. The German pocket battleship, the Graf Spee, had been lurking off the South American coast, in the shipping route between Brazil / Argentina and Britain. After hearing reports that the Doric Star and Taroa had been attacked, Commodore Harwood, the commander of the British South American Naval Division, estimated the location of the Graf Spee using the speed the ship was able to travel and its last known location, and pure luck. He stationed his four cruisers at the mouth of the River Plate and waited.

After the battle, the Graf Spee sailed into Montevideo. The captain later scuttled the ship after evacuating the crew.

If the day is clear, it is possible to see the Graf Spee when flying into Montevideo.

There are approximately 9000 hectares of vineyards in Uruguay. Only 5% is being exported - so far.
