Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which valley would you find the Bowder Stone?

Answer: Borrowdale

The Bowder Stone weighs approximately 200 tonnes and stands an impressive 30 feet high. The Stone probably originated from Scotland after being brought down by the last Ice Age.
2. Who or what is The Bishop of Barf?

Answer: A white painted commemorative stone on a fell side.

The rock is on the slopes of Barf, a fell on the western shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. In the late 1700's, the then Bishop of Derry, to prove his faith in God, and after a few drinks in the local pub, had a bet with the locals that he could ride up the fell on his horse.

Unfortunately all didn't go as planned, as the horse tried to climb up the steep sides it slipped and fell, killing him. The white rock makes the place where he died.

The rock is painted white by the locals of the pub at nearby Thornthwaite.
3. Which lake is reputed to have a floating island that appears and disappears?

Answer: Derwentwater

The "Floating Island" appears at intervals on the surface of the lake. This can be seen in the SE corner. It's supposed to owe its appearance to the formation of gas, formed by the decay of vegetable matter, detaching and rising from the bed of the lake.
4. In 1954, schoolboy Steven Darbishire became famous for photographing what, close to the shores of Coniston?

Answer: A UFO

In February of 1954, Stephen Darbishire was walking on the fells near to Coniston Old man, when he spotted a strange object. It was seen first by his cousin Adrian near to Dow Crag. He managed to take a few blurred photographs before it disappeared at high speed. A report of his encounter was published in the Lancashire Evening Post.
5. Where in the Lake District, would you go to observe golden eagles?

Answer: Riggindale

Riggindale is on the shores of Haweswater. In 1929 it became a reservoir for Manchester. As a result the villages of Mardale and Measand were demolished. In times of little rainfall the remains of the villages can still be seen.
6. Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwentwater are home to which rare species of freshwater fish?

Answer: Vendace

The vendace occurs in only two other areas in Britain, both of those are in Scotland. Fertilized eggs from the fish in Bassenthwaite have been shipped to Scotland to boost the population there.
7. Long Meg and Her Daughters is a massive Bronze Age circle and is near to which Cumbrian town?

Answer: Penrith

Research suggests that the circle originally consisted of 70 stones, but now there are only 59 left.
8. Lake Windermere has how many islands?

Answer: Fourteen

The largest is Belle Isle.
9. By which Lakeland Pass would you find the Three Shire Stone?

10. Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens can be found by the shores of which lake?

Answer: Bassenthwaite
