Lloyd Mangrum (1914-1973) from Trenton, Texas became a professional golfer at the age of 15 and joined the PGA Tour in 1937. His career was interrupted during WWII where in served in the US Army and was present at the D-Day landings in Normandy and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. He was the leading money winner on the PGA Tour in 1951. He also had 6 other professional wins in Argentina, Philippines and Australia.

Herman Keiser (1914-2003) from Springfield, Missouri also had his career interrupted by WWII where he spent 3 years in the U.S. Navy. He had 5 PGA Tour wins and his only golfing major was the 1946 Masters Tournament. Sam Snead (1912-2002) from Ashwood, Virginia won 82 PGA Tour events including 7 golfing majors. In 1946 he won the British Open. Ben Hogan (1912-1997) from Stephenville, Texas won 64 PGA Tour events including 9 golfing majors. In 1946 he won the US PGA Championship.

Herman Hesse (1877-1962) was a German-born Swiss poet, novelist and painter. During WWI he attacked the German press and became very unpopular and through marriage obtained Swiss citizenship in 1923. Later in the 1930's the German press stopped publishing his works and they were eventually banned by the Nazi regime.

Theodor Heuss (1884-1963) was the 1st President of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) from 1949-1959. In 1908 he married Elly Heuss-Knapp and the priest at their wedding ceremony was Albert Schweitzer who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. Winston Churchill (1874-1965) won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) was born in Chile and was the first Latin American women to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature which she achieved in 1945.
