Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. France, Vimy Ridge, 1917.

Answer: Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg vs General Robert Nivelle and General Sir Arthur Currie

Today a beautiful park surrounds the Canadian National Vimy Memorial at the site of the battle. German trenches and Canadian tunnels are also preserved.
2. Tsar Alexander 1, Francis II of Austria and General Mikhail Illarionovitch Kutuzov vs the Grande Armee's Marshal Jean Lannes and Marshal Jean-Baptise Bessières.

Answer: Austerlitz, 1805

The Austerlitz battlefield is relatively unspoiled. A memorial, installed in 1930, marks the site of Napoleon's headquarters. Napoleon commissioned the Arc de Triomphe to celebrate his victory, but it wasn't completed till 1836.
3. General Lord Arthur Wellesley (Viscount Wellington) vs Marshal Auguste Fréderic de Marmont.

Answer: Salamanca, 1812

The old bridge at Salamanca, over which Wellington's baggage filed during the morning's move west and over which the victorious general rode later that day, can still be seen but is, sadly, falling into disrepair.
4. North Africa, El Alamein, 1942.

Answer: General Erwin Rommel vs Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery

Surely you got that one right! El Alamein, on the Mediterranean coast, lies about 66 miles west of Alexandria and 150 miles north-west of Cairo. The Axis forces were turned back here and never reached Cairo, the Nile or the Suez Canal.
5. South Africa, Spioenkop, Natal, 1900.

Answer: General Sir Redvers Buller vs General Louis Botha

Other famous participants at this battle was the young Mahatma Gandhi as leader of a Natal Indian Ambulance Corps and Winston Churchill as a correspondent for the London "Morning Post".
6. Virginia, North America. Manassas / First Bull Run, 1861.

Answer: General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson vs General Irvin McDowell

On the slope behind Henry House, home of widow Mrs Carter is where Stonewall Jackson earned his nickname. A well preserved battlefield, with trails, an equestrian statue of Jackson and memorials to Colonel Bartow and General Bee are amongst the many interesting sights to see.
7. Crown Prince William of Germany and General Erich von Falkenhayn vs General Joseph Joffre and Major Sylvain-Eugene Raynal.

Answer: Fort Faux, Verdun, 1916

Another well preserved battlefield. Major Raynal was the commander of the stubborn garrison of Fort Faux and he was congratulated on his brave resistance by the Crown Prince himself, after they were forced to surrender.
8. Somme, 1916.

Answer: General Sir Douglas Haig vs General Erich von Falkenhayn

The Somme was a prolonged massacre, lasting from July to November 1916, with nearly 420,000 casualties. Not much can be said of the commanders, who it seems, fail to grasp the deadly efficiency of the machine-gun. Perhaps a spell fighting on the front lines would have done them a power of good.
9. Commander Mitsuo Fuchida, Lieutenant Commander Shigekazu Shimazaki, Admiral Isoruko Yamamoto and Vice Admiral Chuichi. Nagamo vs Rear Admiral Patrick Bellinger, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and Lieutenant Commander Francis J. Thomas.

Answer: Pearl Harbor, 1941

The sneaky victory that crippled American naval power in the Pacific temporarily, and brought America and her vast economic resources and industry into the war, led to Japan's ultimate defeat.
10. Field Marschal Walter Model, General Sepp Dietrich and General Hasso von Manteuffel vs General Omar Bradley, Lieutenant General Courtney Hodges and Lieutenant General George S. Patton.

Answer: Wacht am Rhein, 1944

This is of course, the German code name of what is better know as the "Battle of the Bulge". The last offensive launched by a desperate Wehrmacht led to McAuliffe's famous "Nuts" reply at Bastogne and the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
