Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. April 14, 1935, was a very windy Sunday. As if the drought wasn't enough, the biggest dust storm I ever saw destroyed all my crops. I had to move my family to California to make a living. Where in the United States was I living when this Black Sunday happened?

Answer: Oklahoma

There was a severe drought in the 1930s. Add that to deforestation from over-farming and you get loose top soil, that's very vulnerable to the wind. The area most affected by these dust storms included parts of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma (collectively known as the Dust Bowl). Thousands of people from those states were forced to relocate and try their luck elsewhere.

The worst storm happened on April 14, 1935, a day that became known as the Black Sunday.
2. I'm a soldier in the English army. We have invaded France, as our king, Edward III, is claiming the French throne. The war was going well and we were camping outside Paris, but on April 14, 1360, there was a huge storm and many soldiers died, struck by lightning and hailstones. The rest of us had to run for cover and the horses were scattered. This Black Monday may have cost us the war, but which war?

Answer: The Hundred Years' War

The Black Monday devastated the English army and many saw it as a sign that God didn't want Edward III on the French throne. A peace treaty was negotiated, but war resumed a few years later. It was only 23 years old at the time, too young to earn its later name.
3. I took my life's savings out of the mattress and decided to invest them in the stockmarket. The decision seemed wise, until October 29, 1929, when stock prices fell abruptly. Was this Black Tuesday the first day of the Wall Street crash?

Answer: No

Although Black Tuesday is considered the worst day in the stock market crash, it wasn't the first, as it followed a Black Thursday (October 24) and a Black Monday (October 28).
4. We were working as air controllers in New York City, on September 15, 1954, a day with very bad weather. Several planes were delayed that day, since we couldn't handle all the traffic we had to direct. Why did we have to direct so much air traffic on that Black Wednesday?

Answer: In bad weather, the use of an air controller was mandatory

The increase in air traffic in the 1940s and 1950s presented a problem to airports that didn't have enough controllers. The Black Wednesday brought that problem to light, as thousands of passengers were delayed.
5. As a British pilot, I consider August 15, 1940 "The Greatest Day". However, if I were a Luftwaffe pilot, I would call it Schwarzer Donnerstag, which is German for Black Thursday. During what war did that day happen?

Answer: World War II

The Greatest Day (or Black Thursday, depending who you were rooting for in World War II) gave the Germans heavy losses in their first full scale attack on Britain.
6. I really hate today! There's too much traffic and the stores are crowded with people taking advantage of the sales. Black Friday is just not my thing. I do love the day before, though. What day would that be?

Answer: Thanksgiving

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, when many stores have promotional sales to kick-off the holiday shopping season.
7. I remember when the Soviet Union deployed missiles in Cuba, seriously threatening to replace the Cold War with a Nuclear War. The situation was resolved, though, but there was a black day, when tensions were at its peak. What day was that, knowing it's the only day I haven't ask you about in this quiz?

Answer: Saturday

I started with a Black Sunday, then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There are no more days, though, so I will have to get a little creative from now on.
8. I'm a single South Korean boy. Since I didn't have a date on Valentine's Day (which we also call White Day), I get to celebrate another traditon. What happens on April 14, the Black Day?

Answer: Single people eat together to celebrate not having a boyfriend/girlfriend

On Black Day, South Korean single people get together and eat noodles with black bean sauce, in order to celebrate being single.
9. My name is Gordon Lightfoot and I wrote a song called "Black Day in July", about a riot that followed a police raid of an unlicensed bar. In what American city did the 12th Street Riot took place?

Answer: Detroit

The Detroit riot started on July 23, 1967, lasted for 5 days and caused 43 deaths.
10. I'm an English sailor. July 31st, 1970 was a very dark day for me, as it was the Black Tot Day, the last day the Royal Navy gave me my daily tot. But what was a tot?

Answer: The rum ration

In 1970, the Royal Navy finally decided it was fed up with the disciplinary problems caused by drunk sailors and stopped giving them a daily rum ration.
