Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the earliest battle in which young Scipio took part in and his age when he did so respectively?

Answer: Battle of Ticinus; 18 years old

Scipio was not in command of the field, but he fought bravely and even saved his father, who had been wounded by the Carthaginians.
2. What was the first battle which Scipio personally commanded, the country where it took place, and the year in which it was fought respectively?

Answer: Battle of Cartagena; Hispania; 209 BC

In 210 BC, Scipio offered to take command of a Roman army that was to be sent to Hispania after his father and uncle were killed in battle by the Carthaginians. Surprising the three enemy commanders in Hispania, he managed to attack and storm Carthago Nova, the base of Carthaginian power in the country.
3. In 208 BC, Scipio faced Hasdrubal at the Battle of Baecula. The end result was a clear Roman victory. What did Hasdrubal do after that?

Answer: He led the remains of his army into Gaul and Italy to join Hannibal

Many have criticised Scipio for not pursuing Hasdrubal and annihilating his army, but with two untouched enemy armies behind him, the end result would probably be a second Lake Trasimene, had Scipio chased Hasdrubal.
4. The Battle of Ilipa was a decisive victory for Scipio over Hasdrubal and Mago. It resulted in the total annihilation of the Carthaginian army.

Answer: False

The Carthaginians were not totally destroyed. About 6,000 soldiers managed to escape, with the rest being killed or captured.
5. What did the Carthaginian commanders in Hispania do after the disastrous battle of Ilipa?

Answer: They left Hispania for Africa.

The 6,000 survivors of Ilipa evacuated Hispania along with their Punic commanders. Ilipa was, in other words, the great decisive battle that had enabled Scipio to secure control of Hispania.
6. Who was the Numidian prince who promised to support Scipio but later defected?

Answer: Syphax

Syphax later changed his mind and married the daughter of Hasdrubal. He was to fight alongside the Carthaginians against the combined armies of Scipio and Massinissa, who was the other Numidian prince.
7. At the battle of the Great Plains, Scipio achieved a great victory for the Romans. After Massinissa and his cavalry chased away the enemy horsemen, the infantry engaged. What did Scipio do when he realised that the hastati could not defeat the fierce Spanish mercenaries?

Answer: He used his principes and triarii to attack the flanks of the enemy army

The Spanish mercenaries defended themselves fiercely, but when they were flanked by the principes and trairii, they broke and routed.
8. After the Battle of the Great Plains, Hannibal then returned with his veterans from the campaign in Italy to fight the battle of Zama with Scipio. Zama was very nearly a drawn battle, but the Romans won because of their superior numbers.

Answer: False

The Romans won because their superior cavalry attacked Hannibal's veterans from behind, routing them completely and resulting in the final destruction of Hannibal's formidable army.
9. The last battle that Scipio fought was the Battle of Magnesia. When did the battle take place and in what war was it?

Answer: 190 BC; Roman-Syrian War

Scipio fought the battle with his brother, defeating the Seleucid Empire and forcing it to sign an armistice.
10. Scipio died in 183 BC. Where was he buried?

Answer: Liternum

Liternum is in southern Italy. At his death, Scipio allegedly demanded that his body be buried away from Rome, citing "ungrateful fatherland, you will not even have my bones". Bithynia was the place where his greatest rival, Hannibal, died.
