In this year Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.
3. The attempt by Philip II, King of Spain, to invade England failed disastrously. In which year did he send his Armada to conquer England?

Answer: 1588

Philip II (1527-1598, reigned 1556-98) was a zealous champion of the Counter-Reformation. In 1570 Pope Pius V declared Elizabeth I "deposed" and called on her subjects to rise up in rebellion against her - which they didn't. Philip II, vexed by Elizabeth's support for the Dutch, took it upon himself to convert England to Roman Catholicism.

Answer: Dominican Republic

Columbus first discovered some islands in the Bahamas and then Cuba. He set up what was intended to be a permanent settlement on Hispaniola, under Spanish rule. The Dominican Republic shares this island with Haiti, which is in the western part of Hispaniola.
5. In which year did William the Conqueror defeat the Anglo-Saxons and establish his rule over England?

Answer: 1066

William the Conqueror was crowned in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1066 and proceeded to set up one of the most centralized states of the time.

Answer: 1776

In the midst of the Revolution representatives of the Thirteen Colonies signed the Declaration, thus establishing the U.S.A. as a sovereign country.
7. When did King John issue Magna Carta?

Answer: 1215

King John, at war with many of his barons, was forced to accept Magna Carta. To a large extent it re-established the rights and privileges of the Church and the aristocracy, but it also established the principle that the King of England had to rule within the law - that is what came to be known as the "rule of law".

Answer: 1799

He died admired and respected.
9. When were the first Negroes brought to English colonies?

Answer: 1619

In purely legal terms they were "indentured servants". In reality, however, they had almost no rights and in practical terms, they were slaves. There is disgreement as to their exact status.

Answer: 1847

The Mormons were led by Brigham Young.
