Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Logan's nickname?

Answer: Black Jack

2. Logan came from an area called "Little Egypt." Where is it?

Answer: Southern Illinois

Little Egypt comprised of the 16 southernmost counties of Illinois and is both geographically and culturally part of the South. Many people wanted to break away from the rest of Illinois, form their own state, and join the Confederacy. Logan's pro-Union stance was vital in keeping this strategic area loyal to the North.
3. When did Logan first assume command of the Army of the Tennessee?

Answer: July 22, 1864

Logan became commanding officer of the Army of the Tennessee following the death of Major General James McPherson at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek.
4. Logan performed brilliantly at the Battle of Atlanta and inflicted a crushing defeat on Confederate General John Bell Hood. What was his reward?

Answer: He was demoted.

Despite the fact that Sherman described him as "perfect in battle," Logan's longstanding rival, General George H. Thomas, convinced Sherman to give command of the Army of the Tennessee to O. O. Howard.
Logan returned to his command of the Army's XV Corps, but Fighting Joe Hooker was so angered by Howard's promotion that he resigned his command.
5. Logan and Sherman were bitter enemies for many years. How did Logan get his "revenge" on Sherman?

Answer: Cut his salary

Returning to Congress after the War, Logan used his position as Chairman of the House Military Affairs Committee to reduce Sherman's $19,000 a year salary as head of the Army in 1870.
6. What Union veteran's organization did Logan serve as Commander-in-Chief until his death in 1886?

Answer: The Grand Army of the Republic

7. What holiday is Logan credited with starting?

Answer: Memorial Day

In 1868, as Commander-in-Chief of the GAR, Logan issued orders that a day be set aside to decorate the graves of fallen comrades with flowers. The first "official" Memorial Day observance took place in Carbondale, Illinois.
8. Logan opposed the impeachment of Andrew Johnson.

Answer: False

Logan regarded Johnson as a traitor and probably would have prefered to see him hanged than impeached. Logan was one of seven House members who served on the Impeachment Committee.
9. Logan ran unsuccessfully for Vice President on the Republican ticket in 1884. Who was his running mate?

Answer: James G. Blaine

The election of 1884 was one of the closest, and dirtiest, in U.S. history. A swing of a few thousand votes in New York state would have given the Blaine-Logan ticket the victory.
10. Logan died on December 26, 1886. What did his son, John A. Logan, Jr., do in 1899 that would have made his father proud?

Answer: Won the Medal of Honor

John A. Logan, Jr., was killed in action and awarded the Medal of Honor during the Phillipine Insurrection in 1899.
