The Sydney Botanic Gardens (now the Royal Botanic Gardens) were established in 1816. Today, the Royal Botanic Gardens remain as Australia's oldest scientific institution and a world leading botanical garden.

Answer: 1824

Lachlan Macquarie served as Governor of New South Wales for over ten years and a lot of what exists in Sydney today was due to Macquarie's vision and leadership!
3. In what year of the 1840's did the Australian Museum first open a zoo in Hyde Park?

Answer: 1849

Established in 1827, the Australian Museum was originally called the Colonial Museum. It became the Austalian Museum in 1836. Its first 'custodian' was accidently shot while collecting bird specimens at Moreton Bay in 1831!

Chloroform was first used as an anaesthetic in 1847 by a Scottish physician and was generally accepted by the English speaking world after 1853, owing to Queen Victoria being administered chloroform during childbirth.

A British naval surgeon, Henry John Lindeman first established a vineyard on the Paterson River at Gresford. He believed that wine had medicinal properties and required ageing before it could be properly enjoyed and began exporting his wines in 1858.

The Fairfax family, in 2003, still own the oldest newspaper in Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald. In 1841, Charles Kemp and John Fairfax bought the Sydney Herald (issued weekly from 1831 and daily from 1840) and added the 'Morning' to its name in 1842.
8. In what year of the 1830's was the first race meeting held at Randwick in Sydney?

Answer: 1833

Randwick was originally called 'Sandy Course' and was actually relocated to Homebush in 1838 but in 1860 it was moved back to Randwick and has been known as Royal Randwick since 1992, thanks to Queen Elizabeth II.
9. In what year of the 1800's did Governor Macquarie resign from office?

Answer: 1821

Lachlan Macquarie was Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. He built many buildings, roads and bridges and began town planning in both New South Wales and Tasmania. Earl Bathurst gave Governor Macquarie permission to resign, after he had repeatedly requested the same, in 1821.

Answer: 1822

A species of European bee was introduced sucessfully in 1822. However, there are over 1,500 species of Australian native bees, approximately ten of which are 'stingless'. The smallest is from Cape York and measures less than 2mm and the largest is from northern New South Wales and measures up to 24mm long!
