Gen. Taliaferro commanded 1,300 men at the Battery. On September 6, 1863 the CSA troops evacuated the Battery, leaving Morris Island to the Union troops.

Answer: Strong

Both Gen. Strong and Col. Putman were killed in the battle. Gen. Strong commanded 6,000 troops and attacked on a beach only 200 yards wide.

26-year-old Col. Robert Shaw was the commander of the first black regiment recuited in the North. He was killed in this battle. Their first engagement with CSA troops occured on July 16. On July 18 they were chosen to lead the assualt on "Battery Wagner". They suffered 272 casualties out of 600 men.

He expected reinforcements to arrive. When time was up Gen. Forrest attacked. The Union troops lost 231 killed, 100 wounded, and 226 captured. The black troops at the fort suffered 64 percent killed.

On June 2, 1862 Union Gen. Henry W. Benham began landing troops on James Island. On June 11, 1862 Gen. David Hunter instructed Gen. Benham to only carry out reconnaissance of James Island but not to initiate a general engagement. One of his divisions attacked the CSA position at Secessionville and was repulsed.

The battle took only 6 hours in which the Union troops were beaten. Gen. Benham was informally charged with disobedience for bring on the battle and mustered out of the service in August 1862.

Gen. Burnside sent troops to attack the wall 14 times. He lost 7,000 men. The CSA defenders lost only 1,200 men. The ranks of CSA troops behind the thw wall was four deep. No Union soldiers ever reached the wall, few got within only 50 yards.
