Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of New York when it was under Dutch rule?

Answer: New Amsterdam

Amsterdam in the 17th century was the home base for a lot of rich merchants, and it was on their behalf that the Dutch went exploring around the world to look for trade. Rotterdam, now the leading Dutch port, was at the time less prosperous. The Dutch past in New York is still noticeable in the Dutch neighbourhood or street names like 'Harlem'.
2. In July of 1609 he sailed his ship 'The Half Moon' on the river that now bears his name trying to find a short cut to the West Indies. What is his name?

Answer: Hudson

Hudson was British but employed by the Dutch VOC (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie), he never did find the short cut but stranded on a river bank in the now called Hudson River where a fort was built and later on a town that is now Albany.
3. Fort Nassau was located just outside the boundaries of a town that is now called Albany, but what was the name back then?

Answer: Beverwyck

Why exactly the town was named Beverwyck is not clear... it might have had to do with the fact that the rich merchants from Amsterdam had luxurious summer residences in towns like Beverwijk in The Netherlands. Another explanation is that the skin of beavers (in Dutch 'bevers') was an important trade object back then.
4. The Dutch territory in the US stretched...

Answer: from the Connecticut river to the Delaware river

The territory was known as New Netherland between 1609 and 1664.
5. The Dutch did not fight the Indians but traded beads and knives for food and animal skin. Which main Indian tribe family did they deal with?

Answer: Iroquois

The Iroquois consisted of a family of six tribes: the Mohawk, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, Senecas and Tuscaroras. The French did business with mainly the Algonquin and fought the Iroquois.
6. The British queen Victoria was named 'kora-kowa' by the Indians, but where did the name come from?

Answer: from the name Arendt van Corlaer

The Iroquois language had a word for leader ('Kora' in their language) that was derived from the well respected Dutchman Arendt van Corlaer who once ruled the district Beverwyck. Queen Victoria was named 'kora-kowa' or in other words 'The big Corlaer'.
7. In 1664 the town of Albany got its current name because who signed over the Dutch reign to the British?

Answer: Peter Stuyvesant

In 1664 Peter Stuyvesant surrendered to the British fleet under the command of Nicholls, New Amsterdam became New York and Beverwyck became Albany. The Dutch influence however is not immediatly over and is present until well in the 18th centry.
8. The first poor house in the US was established in Dutch territory.

Answer: True

Back home, in The Netherlands, poor houses were a common sight. As Beverwyck grew there arose a need to look after the less fortunate. One of the first courthouses was established in the territory as well in 1652.
9. The town now named Albany had a strong rivalry with a neighbouring town. What is the name of that town?

Answer: Rensselaerwyck

The patron of Rensselaerwyck was known to be very inconsistent but also mean. To protect the inhabitants from him the people of Beverwyck in 1652 founded their own court.
10. A tangible remainder of the Dutch influence in Albany is...?

Answer: The New Netherland Project

In 1973 The New Netherland Project opens to research the Dutch history of the US.
