Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are in a C-47 Sky Train plane. You are an M9 bazooka operator in your squad. All the other soldiers in your squad carry rifles and pistols while you carry an M9 bazooka, an M1 carbine, a pistol and a few grenades. Soon into the journey, ack-ack fire opens up around the formation of C-47s. What do you do now?

Answer: Sit tight and hope the pilot can fly through the barrage

All the soldiers could do was pray and sit tight. If you leaned out of the plane, you would most likely fall off and die. The other two options only tell the others that you are a coward.
2. Soon later the plane makes it through the wave of bullets. Five minutes later the pilot turns the green light on for the jump. You land safely but you are on your own. What should you do now?

Answer: Go out in search of fellow Americans

The right choice is to regroup. Otherwise, if you go out alone and attack a group of Germans, you probably wouldn't stand a chance. Also it would be foolish to swim because you will run out of energy and drown. The bush choice can provide you some camouflage but it would get you nowhere.
3. You head on in search of your leader. But as you walk, you feel and hear rumbles in the distance. You take a look and see it is a German Tiger tank along with five German soldiers. If you run away, the Germans will spot you. What will you do?

Answer: Toss in a grenade in the open Tiger's hatch and kill the Germans with your M1 Carbine and pistol

The grenade was most effective against Tiger tanks because the American bazookas weren't that powerful, so most of the time their shells bounced off! The soldiers would probably gun you down before you could stab the with your bayonet.
4. You have taken care of the tank and soldiers when you hear footsteps in the field next to you. You hide behind a tree and see a soldier walking on the field. He sees you and takes cover behind another tree. You decide to use your cricket to see who he is. You snap the cricket and he snaps his and just to confirm it is an American, what should you say and what should he reply with?

Answer: You: Flash - Him: Thunder

'Flash' and 'Thunder' were the American paratrooper words to see if they were American. Able Able is the British 6th airborne phrase, based on their company. The other two are made up.
5. As you walk to the fellow soldier, you realize he is your squadron leader 1st Lieutenant Jimmy Sampson! You greet each other and head off together to Saint- Côme-du-Mont, the rendezvous point. After two hours of walking, you hear gunshots in the nearby town of Sainte-Mère-Eglise. You and Jimmy go to help your fellow Americans. You see six Americans already dead and two German Panzer 3s coming your way. What do you do?

Answer: Blast two bazooka shells into the tanks

The Panzer 3s have much less armor than Tiger and Panther tanks so the bazooka would do some damage to them. If you called for help by the radioman, it would already be too late. If you were lucky, some nice German or American would come to sweep your smoking remains into a shoe box.
6. Jimmy leads you and the other Americans to Saint Côme-du-Mont when you hear rumbles and explosions near you. You soon realize that the beach landings have started! What do you do now?

Answer: Keep advancing

Your job is to fight and advance not greet your friends like a greeter!
7. As you enter Saint Côme-du-Mont you realize that the Germans are still putting up fierce resistance in the city. You are assigned to clear some Germans out. At a house you see some Germans that are surrendering to you. What do you do?

Answer: Take them back to the Headquarters

You should always take prisoners back alive. Your generals probably want to get some information too!
8. You have been assigned now to count/identify the dead of the 101st division. What do you need to use to identify the dead bodies?

Answer: Dog tags

Every soldier has a dog tag around their neck with their name, rank and serial number. It helps tell who are the dead if their faces are too badly damaged and cannot be identified.
9. After taking Saint Côme-du-Mont you are injured as a German sniper hits you in the leg. The doctor tells you that you will go back to the United States. You say goodbye to your squad and board the transport ship. What is the biggest threat to the ships in the Atlantic?

Answer: Aircraft

Even if a ship was full of anti aircraft guns, some planes will get through and probably sink a ship. At this stage of the war the U-boat peril was largely over as many U-boats had sunk in storms or while attacking convoys. However this was a few years after the disastrous convoy incident PQ-17 and the German air power had decreased a lot. So if you were in the Atlantic the plane you would most likely see is a German Condor, used to fly over convoys and report their position, not attack.
10. This is not related to the story. But what was the next major operation after D-Day for the 101st?

Answer: Operation Market Garden (Arnhem)

Arnhem was a failure for the Allies as they failed to capture the last bridge at Arnhem. The Battle of the Bulge was the next battle in line after Arnhem. Iwo Jima was in the Pacific where the 101st wasn't fighting. Operation Desert storm was in Kuwait and 46 years after World War 2!
