Answer: Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest began in Munich, Bayern in 1818. Today it is the most famous and largest beer festival in the world. In 2007 6.2 million visitors drank 6.9 million liters of beer. (I was one of the visitors and several of the liters that year).
2. What Bavarian brewery is the oldest in the world?

Answer: Weihenstephan

Weihenstephan was a monastery founded in the eighth century. It began brewing beer in 1040.
3. What Bavarian brewery was founded by the monks of the Neudeck ob der Au cloister?

Answer: Paulaner

Paulaner began brewing in 1634.

Rauchbier is "smoked beer." The grains are smoked over a fire prior to the brewing process. The smoked flavor is similar to hickory or "smoked" gouda. It is definitely an acquired taste.

Lowenbrau means "Lion's Brew." The "tonight is kind of special" ad campaign ran in the 1970s and 80s. Vince Neil credits the spelling of Lowenbrau as why there are umlauts in Motley Crue.

Reinheitsgebot allowed only water, barley and hops (the active ingredient, yeast, was not mentioned as most brewers relied on wild yeasts in open vats. The Reinheitsgebot continued to be the law of not only Bayern but also German after Unification in 1871.

This destroyed many local specialties from the North of Germany and led to the virtual monopoly of Pilsners in the North of Germany. It has since been replaced by the similarly written Provisional German Beer Law of 1993.

Answer: Augustiner Brau

Augustiner began brewing in 1328 and brews as much as 90 million liters a year.
