Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joe believes that "The beaver is a truly proud and noble animal" What beer is he pushing with his patriotic rant?

Answer: Molson's Canadian

The full rant is:
"Hey. I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader.
And I don't live in an igloo, or eat blubber, or own a dogsled.
And I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada, although I'm certain they're really, really nice.
I have a Prime Minister, not a President.
I speak English and French, NOT American. And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.
I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack. I believe in peace keeping, NOT policing, diversity, not assimilation, and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.
A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch, and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed'!
Canada is the second largest landmass, the first nation of hockey, and the best part of North America!
My name is Joe! And I am Canadian!"

So of course to be a true Canadian you must drink Molson's Canadian. Mind you there is a lot of beaver in Canada. Gets everywhere - in offices and in houses and they have to be chased out. It's thirsty work and Molsons is a good beer to drink when you're chasing beaver.
2. When is Guinness a Canadian beer?

Answer: When it's in bottles

When Guinness is sold in bottles in Canada, it's brewed under license by Labatts. And it tastes awful. Really bad. No worse than that! Like Labatts Blue with burnt toast in it.
If you fancy a Guinness in Canada go to an Irish pub or buy it in the "Draft cans" with the widget. Then you'll be getting the Irish stuff.
3. OK so Canadian winters are cold. Really cold. Bits can get frozen off. Which Canadian brewery once sold a brew called "Cold Cock Winter Porter"?

Answer: Big Rock

The label showed a rooster in a snowstorm, but it was dropped fairly quickly. I suspect it sold only because of the name as it didn't taste all that good - unlike most of the beer from this big-micro-brewery. Been there, bought the T-Shirt.
4. For which Canadian beer should you "Heed the call"? Watch out for these on the roads at night!

Answer: Moosehead

Many people feel this beer is collected from the other end of the moose.

I've seen two of these (real mooseheads that is, not the beer) on my windshield, one completely wrecked the car and the moose, the second time I was able to stop in time for her to just bang her head on the windshield and run off. I'm glad they were only "small" ones. Big moose are like locomotives on stilts!

Drive carefully in moose country!
5. "Those who like it, like it a lot" That logic is difficult to argue with. One of those who likes it is a strange kilted Scotsman who shouts a lot! Which beer do those people who like it, like?

Answer: Keith's IPA

Also known as "The pride of Nova Scotia" and advertised by a very peculiar Scotsman who shouts at people who spill it. Of course it follows that "those who don't like it, don't like it much"
6. Apparently this beer is "Often Imitated, Never Duplicated" which is a shame because it's an really excellent ale, perfect for drinking while the sun goes down over the lake. What is it?

Answer: Okanagan Springs Pale Ale

Brewed in Vernon BC, this excellent, almost orange ale has a nicely hopped, rich flavour, great for drinking while watching the sun go down over the Lake Okanagan.
7. Warthog Cream Ale. Now there's an image: Beer that tastes of warthog cream. Who brews this strangely named ale?

Answer: Big Rock

It doesn't list Warthog Cream as an ingredient though and it tastes a whole lot better than it sounds! McNalley does like startling names.
8. Rickard's Red is apparently brewed by the "Capilano Brewing Company." But you won't find this brewery in the phonebook - or on the streets. So whose beer are you really drinking?

Answer: Molson's

Yup, Molson's noticed the success of the microbreweries brewing beer that doesn't look like melted yellow snow and decided to capitalise on the trend by producing this red beer at their Vancouver brewery.

Misleading Eh, Joe?
9. Saskatchewan is one of the great grain growing regions of the world. Alas, little of this grain is brewed into local beers. This was an exception, being brewed and available only in the Big Sky province for about ninety years. The brewery was bought out in the 60's and finally closed in 2002.

Answer: Molson's Bohemian

"Boh" has a long Saskatchewan brewing history, origionally brewed for 50 years by a local brewer that was bought out by Molson in the 60's. This beer continued to be brewed only at Molson's Saskatchewan micro brewery, which was closed in 2002. Now the only beer brewed in Saskatchewan is found in brew pubs.
10. Can you order a "Bighorn" from the waitress and keep a straight face? Which Canadian Brew Pub chain brews "Bighorn Bitter"?

Answer: Brewsters

I still find it difficult to keep a straight face asking the waitress for "a Bighorn please".
But they're used to it and the brew is worth it - as good a bitter as you'll get outside England, and better than many you'll get there. It's named after the Bighorn sheep that scare the bejebers out of drivers in the mountain parks by eating the rock salt off the roads.
