Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Prosperity expansion introduces a new Victory card worth ten victory points, what is it called?

Answer: Colony

The Prosperity expansion pack contains twenty five new Kingdom cards and two new Supply cards, Platinum and Colony. Platinum is a Treasure that costs nine Coins to buy and is worth five Coins in the game. Colony is a new Victory card that is worth ten victory points and costs eleven Coins to buy.

In a game using Colonies the game ends when either the Colony or the Province pile is empty or when three other Supply piles are empty.
2. Which expansion released in October 2009 introduced Duration cards for the first time?

Answer: Seaside

The Seaside expansion includes twenty six new Kingdom cards some of which are Duration cards. Duration cards are a type of card that stay in play for a specified number of turns meaning they are not removed in Clean-up. The Duration cards in Seaside have an instruction for when the card is initially played and further instructions for subsequent turns that the card remains in play.
3. The Nocturne expansion adds a new phase to the gameplay which takes place after the buy phase. What is this additional phase called?

Answer: Night

The Night phase comes after the Buy phase but before the Clean-up phase of a player's turn. During the Night phase a player may play as many cards of the Night type as they wish. Night cards are a new type of Kingdom card that is introduced in the Nocturne expansion.

As well as introducing the Night phase and cards Nocturne also introduces two new types of landscape card called Boons, which give players positive things, and Hexes, which have a negative effect on the player.
4. The Dark Ages expansion includes which type of card that replace a player's starting Estate cards?

Answer: Shelters

Shelters are a new type of card found in the Dark Ages expansion pack. There are three different Shelters and each player starts with one of each of Overgrown Estate, Hovel and Necropolis. The Necropolis card gives the player +2 Actions, the Overgrown Estate is a Victory card worth zero victory points but does allow the player to draw an extra card when it is trashed while the Hovel does nothing except allow the player to trash it when they gain a Victory card. By starting with cards that 'do something' rather than Estates Shelters encourage players to alter their tactics, especially in the early rounds of the game.
5. Alchemy, a small expansion from 2010, introduced a new type of Treasure. What was this treasure called?

Answer: Potion

Potion is a type of Treasure introduced in the Alchemy expansion, the card costs four Coins to buy and when played is worth one Potion, represented by a potion bottle symbol on relevant cards. Cards with Potion in their cost will have a Coin value (if greater than zero) shown next to a potion bottle symbol, to buy cards with Potion in the cost a player must play Treasure cards meeting the Coin amount shown and the required number of Potion cards.
6. Which expansion introduces the Debt mechanism to the game?

Answer: Empires

The Debt mechanism allows players to buy certain cards by taking Debt tokens rather than paying the cost in Coins. Cards that can be bought this way have a cost in Debt marked in a red hexagon on the card. If a player has Debt tokens they are not allowed to buy cards until they have got rid of their Debt tokens by paying one Coin per Debt token.
7. The Renaissance expansion introduces cards that give players Villagers. What do players get if they cash in a Villager?

Answer: +1 Action

A number of cards in the Renaissance expansion give players a number of Villagers. When a player gains Villagers they add the required number of coin tokens to their Villagers mat. During a player's Action phase they may remove coin tokens from the Villagers mat in order to gain +1 Action per token removed.
8. The Menagerie expansion introduces a type of landscape card that gives players an alternative way to play their Action cards. What is the name given to these landscape cards?

Answer: Ways

The Menagerie expansion was released in March 2020 and introduced a new type of landscape cards called Ways. Landscape cards are so called because they are printed in a landscape orientation unlike other cards in the game that are portrait in orientation.

There are twenty Ways, each named for an animal. In games with Ways players can choose when playing an Action card whether to do what is written on the Action card or to do what is written on the Way instead.
9. The Adventures expansion introduces cards of the Reserve type. These cards tell the player to put the cards on which type of mat?

Answer: Tavern Mat

Reserve cards are initially played as Action cards during the Action phase of the game and feature an instruction to the player to "put this on your Tavern mat". The cards feature additional instructions which detail when a player may call the card from the Tavern mat and what benefits (if any) they will get if they do this, for example the Ratcatcher instructs players that "at the start of your turn, you may call this, to trash a card from your hand". Once called from the Tavern mat and played, the Reserve card is discarded as normal in Clean-up.
10. Dominion cards have a small icon in the bottom right to identify which set they are from. Which expansion set has a horse for its icon?

Answer: Hinterlands

The Hinterlands expansion was released in October 2011 and adds twenty six new Kingdom cards to the game. Having an identifying icon makes it easy to tell which cards belong to which set which is helpful when you have lots of sets. The icon for Seaside is an anchor, for Renaissance a paintbrush and for Dark Ages is a double headed battle-axe.
