Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As is true with many African countries some form of porridge is a staple food - at almost every meal. The residents of which African country have been known to enjoy a porridge made from sorghum for breakfast rather than one made from the more common ingredient, maize?

Answer: Botswana

In Botswana, this sorghum porridge is call bogobe; mielie-meal is the name of the porridge made from maize. Both are somewhat similar to American grits. American grits are usually made from yellow corn. The mielie-meal of Botswana is made usually made from white maize and, as mentioned, bogobe is made from sorghum (grain). Any/all of the dishes are eaten as side dishes or as the entrée. Various toppings, flavorings and additives may be consumed with each grain according to availability and/or personal preference.
2. In this country, rye bread is a staple and it tends to be served with every meal in the traditional homes. Breakfast is no exception for this. The bread is called "black bread" and is often served with a softer sausage (meat) and a black tea for breakfast. Which country is it?

Answer: Russia

In the traditional Russian home breakfast is served every day and is eaten early in the day; it is called zavtrak. Most Russian people would describe their choice of breakfast as simple yet adequate and filling yet nutritious. The meat and bread may be served separately (plated) or may be eaten in somewhat of a sandwich form.

It may be served with the sausage on top of the bread, too. Butter (for the bread) is often an option. Although, some Russians have a taste for coffee with their morning meal, the beverage of choice is more than likely to be (limited to) the black tea.
3. This country which in South America is known to serve rather hearty meals - even for breakfast. A typical breakfast may include chicken stew and rice or a seafood and onion soup called encebollado. Which country?

Answer: Ecuador

In Ecuador, rice is served with (almost) every meal. Most often all meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - offer some form of a stew or soup. Although, substantial and tasty (even to unacquainted palates), most traditional foods of Ecuador are (maybe, surprisingly!) NOT spicy. It is not uncommon, though, to find "aji" or chili sauce on the table with each meal.
4. In which country would you find a round, sweet flatbread called roht served for breakfast? It may be served with apricots, pistachio nuts and/or plain yogurt, and, of course, with their preferred drink, chai, green or black tea.

Answer: Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a large, land-locked country with approximately 99% of its population Muslim. Its large size and large population allows it to offer many diverse areas with local traditional foods. In addition to the roht mentioned other bread (or, grain) products would be eaten for breakfast. Meat and milk based items would be common, along with a wide of fruits, particularly grapes, pomegranates and some melons. All foods would be prepared in accordance with Islamic law.
5. It seems what is traditional has changed somewhat within this Asian country. Some years ago a rather large breakfast of soy sprouts, grilled tofu, steamed eggs and cod fish soup may have been served with a dish of fermented cabbage called kimchi. What country is this?

Answer: Korea (Republic of South Korea)

Korea is known for diverse and, certainly, interesting cuisine. Breakfast foods are no exception. Koreans, much like Chinese and Japanese people, used to begin their day with a table full of different types of meat, rice, soups, vegetables and a few fried dishes. Bulgogi which is a dish made of sliced sirloin (beef) with mushrooms and scallions has been, traditionally, served for breakfast in Korea.

But due to the lack of time to prepare all that food, more and more Koreans have been taking on the Western habit of having a quick meal comprising milk, coffee and bread.

Fiji is a republic in the South Pacific Ocean. It is rich in its own culture yet it is evidently a mixture of many other nearby cultures, too. As with many island nations, availability often dictates what is used and thus becomes culture. In Fiji the pudding-type cakes eaten for breakfast may be made from a recipe using a root vegetable - like cassava - as the base rather than rice or some other grain.

This dough may be topped with coconut cream, sugar, eggs or cheese then baked and, as mentioned, served with homemade scones.
