quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If your piece is on GO, what property would you land on if you moved, ultimately, the maximum amount of spaces allowed in a turn without landing on Chance or Community Chest?

Answer: Short Line Railroad

First, you can roll a twelve on the dice (this will take you to Electric Company). Since you rolled doubles, you can roll again. Once again, you can roll another twelve (this one will take you to Illinois Avenue). But if you roll a third twelve, you will go to jail. This is why the third roll must be an eleven (which will take you all the way to Short Line Railroad).
2. According to the official rules of Monopoly, if your token lands on Free Parking, you receive all the money that has been put in the middle of the board collected from Income Tax and Luxury Tax.

Answer: False

According to the official rules of Monopoly, the Free Parking space does nothing. No money whatsoever is awarded to anybody who lands on it, though it is always fun to "bend the rules".
3. Which of these can you not advance to when drawing the designated Chance or Community Chest cards?

Answer: Marvin Gardens

You can also advance to GO and any of the railroads (Reading Railroad has two cards, one telling you to advance to that property only and one that says to advance to the nearest railroad).
4. Which of these is not possible during a turn, under any circumstances, provided that doubles are not rolled?

Answer: Ventnor Avenue to Water Works

You can't go from Ventnor Avenue to Water Works because that would require the player to roll a one on the dice. And since the game is played with two dice, rolling a one is impossible. The way to get from Baltic Avenue to Boardwalk is to roll a four. This will land you on Chance where there is a possibility you will draw the card which states 'advance to Boardwalk'.
5. Which of these would you never, under any circumstances, have to pay if you happened to stop on a railroad?

Answer: $75

If one railroad is owned, then the person who landed on the property must pay $25. If two are owned, it goes up to $50. With three railroads, the cost doubles to $100, and the fourth increment is $200. $75 dollars is never listed. "But what about $400?" you ask.

There is a certain Chance and Community Chest card that tells you to pay twice the rent after advancing to it, and if all four railroads are owned, the $200 doubles to $400.
6. Complete the sentence taken from a Community Chest card: You have won second place in a beauty contest. Collect ______ dollars.

Answer: 10

A small prize for a small contest. This card depends on the version of Monopoly which you are playing.
7. Which of these will NOT get you thrown in jail?

Answer: Not having enough money to pay for Income Tax

If you don't have enough money, I'd suggest mortgaging some of your properties.
8. These last questions will be about the mathematics of the game. Let's say you own both Electric Company and Water Works. One of your opponents lands on Electric Company with the highest possible number rolled without getting doubles. Immediately after, a second opponent lands on Water Works after rolling the minimum amount (s)he can roll without getting doubles. On average, how much money did you earn from the last two rolls?

Answer: $70

The highest someone can roll without getting doubles is eleven. The lowest someone can get without seeing two of the same number is three. Since both Water Works and Electric Company are owned, each rent is multiplied by ten (this turns the eleven into $110 and the three into $30). If these two numbers are averaged together, then the solution is equal to $70.
9. How much money would you have spent if you bought all the properties that are named after US states?

Answer: $2260

The properties that are named after US states, in order on the board, are: Vermont Avenue ($100), Connecticut Avenue ($120), Virginia Avenue ($160), Pennsylvania Railroad ($200), Tennessee ($180), New York Avenue ($200), Kentucky Avenue ($220), Indiana Avenue ($220), Illinois Avenue ($240), North Carolina Avenue ($300), and Pennsylvania Avenue ($320). If the prices of all these properties are added up, it will equal $2260.
10. If you owned the following properties, how many houses could you buy without them turning into a hotel, assuming that you follow the rules of Monopoly, and there are a total of 30 houses and 12 hotels available for purchase: Baltic Avenue, Mediterranean Avenue, Reading Railroad, Tennessee Avenue, St. Charles Place, Park Place, Virginia Avenue, New York Avenue, B.&O. Railroad, States Avenue, Ventnor Avenue, Pacific Avenue.

Answer: 20

Since you can only buy houses on properties in which you have a monopoly (three of the same color, or two of the same color in some cases), then the only eligible properties are Baltic, Mediterranean, St. Charles, States, and Virginia. You can have a maximum of 4 houses on each property. Five properties times four houses each equals twenty houses.
