Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of game is "The Legends of Andor"?

Answer: Cooperative adventure board game

"The Legends of Andor" is a beautifully illustrated board game. The two-sided game board is a map of the land of Andor (the reverse side features the underground dwarf mines used in Legend 4). The story is told in six scenarios, called "legends", of increasing difficulty.

The first (introductory) legend is a tutorial, which basically means you learn to play this game by starting to play (rather than reading the entire manual before you start). Everything is explained as you go along.
2. "The Legends of Andor" won a prestigious German game award in 2013, a subcategory of the annual "Spiel des Jahres" (Game of the Year) award first given out in 2011. Do you know which?

Answer: Kennerspiel des Jahres (Connoisseurs' Game of the Year)

The "Kennerspiel des Jahres" award has been awarded annually since 2011 in recognition of more complex games for more experienced players. The first game to win this award was "7 Wonders."
"The Legends of Andor" is not a children's game, so the "Kinderspiel des Jahres" award does not apply. The other two options (the special awards) are not regular categories but were given out in 2006 (Special Fantasy Game Award and Special Complex Game Award) and 2008 (Special Complex Game Award).
3. What is the name and main profession of the creator of "The Legends of Andor"?

Answer: Michael Menzel, illustrator

Michael Menzel worked in computer game development for several years and first ventured into the world of board game design and illustration in 2004. He was involved in the graphic (re-)design of several installments in the "Settlers of Catan" franchise. "The Legends of Andor" is the first game that he developed completely by himself, and of course he also took charge of the entire graphic design.
4. What kind of bonus material can be downloaded from the official website of the game?

Answer: All of these

The "Legends of Andor" website is chock-full of bonus material including, in fact, all of the above. As of 2017, there are several expansions to the game as well as a tie-in card game, a tie-in novel, a soundtrack, and several bonus legends. The creators of the game also encourage fans to write their own legends and make them available to other players.

However, at the time of writing this, only one fan-written legend has been included in the official list of bonus material; the others are available in the accompanying discussion forum.
5. Foul creatures roam the lands of Andor. Tarok the dragon is their master, and he sends them forth to overrun Rietburg castle, trying to vanquish King Brandur. The heroes struggle to defend the castle. Which of the following creatures resemble fierce black lizard-like wolves?

Answer: Wardraks

The basic story of the game is that the hero Brandur once won in battle against the last dragon, Tarok, who has been planning his revenge ever since. Now Brandur is the king of Andor and an old man, which is why it is now up to a band of heroes to defend the land and defeat the dragon and his minions. Creatures are placed on the board at the beginning of each legend and they advance in a given direction at the end of each round ("day"). Wardraks are the strongest of these creatures, and they advance twice, which means they reach the castle pretty fast.

The castle must be defended, i.e. only a given maximum number of creatures (depending on how many players there are) can be allowed in.
6. The base game contains four hero characters: the warrior, the archer, the dwarf, and what is the fourth?

Answer: The wizard

Each of the characters has a special ability that comes in handy during gameplay: The warrior gets five instead of three life points at a well, which means he levels up faster. The archer can attack a monster from a neighboring space. The dwarf can shop for strength points at the mine and pays only one gold. Finally, the wizard can flip his die to the opposite side once during a fight. The other three heroes are contained in the "New Heroes" expansion.

The assassin can reduce a monster's strength by one unit and also attacks from a neighboring space (every character carrying a bow and arrow can).

The keeper of the riverlands has a water sprite they can move in their stead and send as reinforcement to a fight; the water sprite has a special die which rolls a higher average result.

The taren is a shapeshifter who can do both hand-to-hand combat and ranged attack.
7. The white narrator token is moving up the side bar throughout the game, and the heroes must complete their mission(s) before it reaches the end. This adds a fair amount of pressure, because the players must make sure that the narrator does not advance too fast. And that is sometimes not easy, because the narrator advances every time one of the things listed below happens EXCEPT...?

Answer: When a player forfeits their turn

Rounds in the game equal days. Each day comprises seven hours; an action by a hero (moving one space or fighting one round) takes one hour. A player completes an action (e.g. walk two spaces = spend two hours), then the next player, and the next, and so forth.

When everyone has completed seven actions, the day ends and the round is over. At the end of each day, another set of events happens: An event card is read (this can have a good or bad impact on the players), the creatures advance, the wells are replenished, and the narrator token moves up one space.

The narrator spaces bear the letters A-N; some of the spaces have a corresponding legend card which must be read when the narrator reaches that spot; this advances the story by introducing new characters or items or bringing up a quest to be fulfilled.
8. Who or what of the following can be found hidden in the fog?

Answer: Reka, the witch

There are 15 fog tokens scattered on the board. They can be passed without effect or they can be activated when a player ends their turn in a space where a fog token is placed (this is a free action and does not cost an hour). When a fog token is activated, it is flipped over and the underside is revealed. Things hidden in the fog include gold, event cards, gors, strength points, will points (life points), and the witch.

The witch is a helpful character; she must be discovered in order to make the witch's potion available, which is helpful in a fight.

She also gives information pertaining to possible quests. The incorrect choices are all boss enemies that must be beaten at different points in the game.
9. Why is it so important to rescue farmers?

Answer: With each rescued farmer, one creature more can be allowed in the castle

Farmer tokens, when flipped, become shield tokens. As soon as a player has rescued a farmer, i.e. taken them safely to the castle without encountering any creatures, the farmer token becomes a shield token. For each shield token (a starting value of two is granted by the game), another creature can be allowed into the castle.

This is extremely important, because as the narrator moves every time a creature is slain, it is not possible to simply kill off every creature that threatens to enter the castle.
10. Which of the following items cannot be bought at the trader's at any time?

Answer: rune stones

Rune stones first appear in the second legend. They come into play at a point in time determined by the roll of a die, and their distribution on the board is also determined by rolling two dice. Rune stones must be discovered and collected. Three different rune stones allow a player to switch one of their dice for a black die that rolls a minimum of six and a maximum of twelve. The spyglass, the falcon, and the helmet can all be bought from the trader's for two gold at any time.

The spyglass allows the user to flip over a fog token without activating it.

The falcon can transport lightweight items (rune stones, for example) between any two players. The helmet allows its wearer to count both dice if you roll doubles.
