Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lars is ready to start painting when he accidentally kicks over an open can of acrylic paint. What is the quickest way to clean it up?

Answer: Dump a bag of kitty litter on it

Acrylic paint is water-based and is not considered hazardous. If you have kitty litter available it makes an easy clean up. The litter will absorb the paint, making the mess easy to scoop into a bag or container. If you set it outside to dry first then it will be safe enough to throw into regular garbage. Alkyd or oil-based paint can also be cleaned up this way. Allow the solvent to evaporate from the mixture outside first before throwing it in the garbage.
2. Lars decides to start the job right by purchasing an expensive, hog hair bristle brush. He starts painting a long row of spindles with acrylic paint when he notices that his brush looks worse than Pippi Longstocking's hair. What happened?

Answer: Natural bristle brushes should not be used for water-based paint

Synthetic brushes (nylon) are best used for water-based paints like acrylic. Bristle brushes are better for alkyd or oil-based paint. Because bristle brushes are made of natural hair, they will soak up water and become misshapen.
3. Argh! Rover came into the house and splattered mud all over the wall Lars painted last week. Lars scrubs the wall immediately with soap and water only to find that the paint is coming off. Why is this happening?

Answer: Lars used acrylic paint and it's not cured yet

Although acrylic paint dries quickly (in 4 to 5 hours, or 1 hour touch dry), it actually takes a month to completely cure. Refrain from washing the walls during this time.
4. Lars decides to spruce up a dingy stippled ceiling that has never been painted. He buys some acrylic paint and starts rolling it on. Oh oh! The stipple is coming off and falling onto the floor. Why?

Answer: Water-based paint should not be put on an unpainted stippled ceiling

The stipple will absorb the water from the acrylic paint, loosen its bond, and fall off the ceiling. It is best to use an alkyd or oil-based paint for the initial coat. Acrylic paint can then be used for future coatings. Stippled ceilings can be rolled or sprayed, but the rules still apply for both methods.
5. Lars did a beautiful job caulking around his windows outside and has painted the frames with some exterior paint. The next day all his work is ruined. The paint is full of craters and has come away from the caulking. Why?

Answer: Lars used silicone caulking that is not compatible with paint

Like paint, caulking takes about a month to fully cure, but you can still paint over it as long as it's dry. Make sure it is a paintable kind such as latex caulking.
6. Now Lars is getting the hang of things. He sprays some primed MDF wall panelling with acrylic paint, waits until it feels dry and then gives it a second coat. It looks perfect! The next day when he looks at it there is more paint on the floor than the wall. The paint that is left on the wall is full of drips and sags. What went wrong?

Answer: He didn't let the first coat dry long enough

Although the first coat was dry to the touch, it needs a full four or five hours to dry before a second coat can be applied. Without adequate drying time, the paint layer becomes too heavy with moisture and sags off the wall.
7. Lars thinks he has learned a lesson or two by now. He decides to roll a coat of epoxy paint on his garage floor. He mixes the two components together, as per directions, and then suddenly decides he needs go for the Endurance badge on FunTrivia. He seals up the can again. Lars returns 16 hours later to find the paint in the can solid as a rock. What happened?

Answer: The pot-life of the epoxy was much less than 16 hours

Pot-life varies depending on the type of epoxy and the amount you are mixing. However, once the catalyst and resin are mixed together you have a limited working time to use the product before it hardens. A common pot-life for household epoxy paint is about 4 hours.
8. Grandma has asked Lars to repaint her kitchen. She finally got tired of those old, glossy, green walls. Lars convinces her that flat acrylic paint is the best thing to use. A few days later Grandma phones Lars in a panic. The kitchen walls are peeling. Now what went wrong?

Answer: All of these

The number one cause for paint failure is improper surface preparation. Firstly, greasy kitchen walls should be cleaned with a degreaser like TSP (trisodium phosphate) and then rinsed. Glossy walls need to be sanded to remove the sheen. This allows the primer to grip onto the substrate.

When transitioning from an oil-based paint (like what Grandma had on her walls) to an acrylic, it is best to use a coat of primer in between.
9. Lars has black smoke stains on his kitchen wall after his fried chicken caught fire on the stove. Cleaning didn't remove the marks so he painted over it. Sure enough, the stain bled through the paint. What should he have done instead?

Answer: Used a stain-blocking primer before painting

There are special primers formulated to seal in tough stains. Once the primer is dry a regular top coat of paint can be used.
10. Lars feels he knows everything now. He decides to spray the walls and ceiling of his basement suite with an airless spray machine. When he's done he's as white as a ghost, his eyes hurt, and his face and hair are encrusted with overspray. What did he forget this time?

Answer: All of these

If Lars had taken all the precautions listed above his eyes would be fine, the overspray would not have stuck to his skin (paint would wash off easily), the hood would have kept his hair clean, and the dust mask would have protected his lungs.

That lazy Lars really likes to learn things the hard way doesn't he? Stay tuned for more upcoming adventures with Lars!
