Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote the music for "Annie Warbucks"?

Answer: Charles Strouse

Charles Strouse was born June 7, 1928, in New York City. He also wrote the music to the original "Annie", as well as "Bye Bye Birdie", "Golden Boy", and others. He often works with lyricist Lee Adams.
2. Compete this line said by Annie: "Last year I had nothing; this year I have everything, even a new ________."

Answer: name

"I'm Annie Warbucks," Annie says near the beginning of the show. Soon, though, she and Warbucks fear they will be separated if he does not get married.
3. According to Commissioner Doyle's song, what does Mr. Warbucks think?

Answer: "You're Above the Law"

"You, I knew just what your response would be since you think you're better than her or me." Commissioner Doyle tells Oliver he has to get married, or Annie will be sent back to the orphanage. Not only that, Doyle has to approve of the woman Warbucks chooses to marry.
4. According to the song "Changes", what is the most important question beating down Annie's door?

Answer: "Will he need her more than he needs me?"

"It's scary, shaky; everything is strange when nothing is certain but change."

Annie is scared that when Daddy Warbucks gets married, he will no longer have time for her. She goes to the orphanage to visit her friends and consult them. She tells them, "I had to talk to somebody my own size."
5. Complete the lyric: "She drinks martinis, you order _______________."

Answer: chocolate milk

The girls at the orphanage have informed Annie that if Warbucks gets married, Annie will be the second woman in his life. They sing "The Other Woman" to tell her how it will be when Daddy Warbucks marries. This only makes Annie more scared of her father finding a wife.
6. When Annie runs away, what state does she end up in?

Answer: Tennessee

This is where she meets Reverend and Mrs. Patterson and CG, their daughter. At the end of the first act, Annie hops on a train assisted by some hobos and runs away. She doesn't know where she will end up. She only knows she is going west.
7. Complete this line often said by Alvin T. Patterson: "We're very ________."

Answer: pleased

Alvin says this line many times in the show.

The Pattersons live in the country in Tennessee. They are very polite people, and also very poor. When they get ready to leave, Alvin has to "crank up" the car.

Sidenote info: When my brother played this part in a community theatre show, every night when he said this line, he got a standing ovation. It's the only time I have seen a spoken line in a musical get a standing ovation.
8. Why does CG say Annie is lucky?

Answer: She will get two kisses goodnight.

Annie told Ella (CG's Mom and Rev Alvin Patterson's wife) that Annie thinks Oliver loves her and rattles off things he has bought her. Ella replies, "Things, them is only things." She then sings a song called "Love", about how love is not something you see or even hear, and "it never goes, if it's truly there."

After Ella leaves, CG tells Annie she is lucky. Annie asks if it's because her dad is rich. CG tells her, "No because now you'll have a ma and pa like me and get two kisses goodnight." The two of them sing the reprise of "Love."
9. What three letters describe what they're going to do to "let out the water when the lands dries up"?

Answer: TVA

The TVA is the Tennessee Valley Authority. It was part of FDR's "New Deal". One of the men in his cabinet earlier tells him to call it "The Bureau of Valleys and Dams, the BVDs," and, as he says it, he pulls on his boxers as BVDs are a brand of men's underwear.
10. Who does Oliver Warbucks marry at the end of the show?

Answer: Grace

Grace, of course, is Mr. Warbucks' secretary. Throughout the musical, Annie tries to convince her dad to marry Grace. He finally asks her, and she says yes. The wedding happens right away.
