Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a term for a free-standing bell tower?

Answer: Campanile

Campana is the Italian word for bell...so if you knew that, this question was a cinch! If you ever come to UC Berkeley, pay a visit to the campanile there, the world's 3rd largest. Also called Sather Tower, it's a great place to get a view of the entire bay area.
2. Which of these C terms is the female counterpart of 'Atlantes'?

Answer: Caryatids

Atlantes and Caryatids are human figures that can be found along columns in Ancient Greek architecture.
3. The term 'Carolingian' refers to the arts promoted during the reign of which monarch and his successors?

Answer: Charlemagne

'Carolingian' also refers to the dynasty founded by Charlemagne which ruled the Holy Roman Empire from the 8th to the 10th centuries. Carolingian art was basically a classical revivalist movement...with a German touch.
4. This is an art movement associated with Russian artists such as Gabo, Pevsner and Tatlin. Name it!

Answer: Constructivism

The movement, founded in 1913, focused on imitation of the modern forms and processes of the technological world. I think my favorite Constructivist artist is Naum Gabo who created seemingly delicate sculptural pieces with nylon string.
5. One of these terms refers to an asymmetrical painting pose in which the subject's body parts twist away from one another, but which one?

Answer: Contrapposto

In a contrapposto pose, the subject's lower body and upper body twist in opposite directions. The term contrapposto is from the Italian for 'to contrast' or 'set opposite'...makes perfect sense!
6. Capital, Stylobate and Shaft are all terms associated with which architectural construct that starts with C?

Answer: Column

A classical column consists of a Capital, Shaft and Base, and rests on a Stylobate.
7. Kurt Schwitters is most associated with which art form?

Answer: Collage

Schwitters, a German artist, was a member of the Dada movement. He was not the originator of the collage, but he did develop variations on it using discarded rubbish in order to create pictures.
8. Which of these pairs of artists are most associated with the use of Chiaroscuro?

Answer: Rembrandt and Caravaggio

Chiaroscuro is a style of painting that deals with contrasting degrees of tones and shading. Rembrandt and Caravaggio were two masters of this craft.
9. What was the very first camera called?

Answer: Camera obscura

A camera obscura employed a lens or small hole to throw an image upon a flat surface. A camera lucida was an innovation on the camera obscura, employing a prism rather than a lens.
10. The calotype was an early process invented by which pioneer of photography?

Answer: Talbot

William Henry Fox Talbot first patented this process in 1840, the first photographic process that utilized a negative to produce an image on paper. Please stay tuned...more art terms are coming to 'D'-light you. (Also, Asian art terms beginning with 'C' for those who want something more exciting still!)
