Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When "My Fair Lady" first opened on Broadway, who played the character of Eliza?

Answer: Julie Andrews

Although all of these women have played Eliza at one time or another, Ms. Andrews did so first. Although she received rave reviews, it was felt she wasn't a well-known enough actress to play the part in the movie, a part later given to Audrey Hepburn.
2. The film version starring Audrey Hepburn won Oscars both for Best Actress and Best Picture.

Answer: False

Although it did win for Best Picture, Hepburn wasn't even nominated for Best Actress, an award that went to Julie Andrews for the title role in "Mary Poppins." Hepburn had won Best Actress for "Roman Holiday" over a decade earlier, her only Oscar for Best Actress, although she was nominated four other times.
3. In "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," what does Eliza want her room to be far away from?

Answer: The cold night air

Like all of Eliza's early songs, it is sung in a Cockney accent, which is why it's "loverly" and not simply "lovely." One of the many things she says she wants is lots of chocolate, something Professor Higgins will later use to tempt her.
4. Which of these phrases is not mastered by Eliza during the song "The Rain in Spain?"

Answer: How do you do?

Although she does later pick up the correct inflection for that question, it is not one of the three she learns during the song. All three were things she had been drilled on repeatedly without success, and suddenly it all came together and she could do it.
5. With her language mostly mastered, where do Higgins and Pickering take Eliza for her first try at blending into upper-class society?

Answer: Ascot Racecourse

Ascot is a real racetrack in the county of Berkshire, the same southern county in which Windsor Castle is located. It was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, and is still in operation.
6. Which of these things doesn't Freddy say is only "On the Street Where You Live?"

Answer: A willow tree

He tells Eliza that he has taken to haunting the street, because it's the only place where he's happy. His song also quotes some of the things she said at the races, and how he loved them even though most of the people she was talking to didn't seem to think they were appropriate.
7. What is the nationality of the phonetics expert at the Embassy Ball who used to be Professor Higgins' student?

Answer: Hungarian

He was Professor Higgins' best student, and deduces that Eliza's English is too good for her to actually be British, as the British are not taught their language very well. I wonder what he'd have to say about the way Americans speak it.
8. Alfred Dolittle, Eliza's father, gets a bequest for several thousand pounds a year, pushing him reluctantly into the middle class. How many thousands does he get a year? (Just the number, as in if it's one thousand, just answer "one.")

Answer: 4

Alfred bemoans this fact, as his lover now wants him to marry her so she's respectable, and everyone is always asking him for money. He seemed to be happier when he was poor and completely free, whereas now he has to follow the morality and rules of middle-class society.
9. No other character in the play understands why Eliza is upset after the Embassy Ball.

Answer: False

Mrs. Higgins understands perfectly well, allowing Eliza to stay briefly at her home, and telling her she did the right thing in leaving Professor Higgins. She has little to no respect for her son, and is amazed Eliza learned such good manners from him. Eliza replies she learned them from Col. Pickering, not Higgins.
10. "My Fair Lady" is based on Shaw's play "Pygmalion." When the play was first performed in 1914, how did it end?

Answer: With Eliza planning to marry Freddy

Shaw actually wrote an essay on why the ending had to be the way it was, and why Higgins and Eliza shouldn't end up together. He surprised everyone in 1938 when he changed his mind as he adapted the play into a film, and wrote the ending that is used for "My Fair Lady."
