Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city did the Judson Church Movement (JCM) take place?

Answer: New York City

The JCM was centered at, and named after, the Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village.
2. The JCM was fuelled by choreographers attempting to take modern dance to a new place. Which of the following was NOT an approach characteristic of the JCM?

Answer: Designing theatrical ballets in the tradition of Martha Graham.

The JCM tried to break from what they saw as being the pantomime of modern dance. It was a very minimalist approach. A lot of the work was improvised and incorporated what is considered pedestrian movement. This tendency is still somewhat controversial, as people wonder about the point of going to see dancers try to move in un-dancerly fashion.

The JCM performances were often free and in public spaces (like the Judson Church). This was a revolution in itself, in that it allowed people of a lower economic class to participate in the dance, while previously it had been a pasttime strictly for the rich.
3. Yvonne Rainer was one of the most vocal members of the JCM. She later became a respected film director. Which of the following was one of her most famous choreographic works?

Answer: 'Trio A'

'Primitive Mysteries' was Martha Graham. 'Revelations' was Alvin Ailey'. 'Travelogue' was Merce Cunningham. 'Trio A' was a solo phrase created by Rainer that was used in many different structures. A particularly interesting use of this work was for a dance demonstration against the war in which Rainer and dancers performed 'Trio A' in various formations completely naked but for American flags draped over the fronts of their bodies.
4. Which of the following is true of the works of Senta Driver, one of the JCM choreographers?

Answer: Women often lifted men.

In her efforts to explode many conventions of the theater and dance, Driver often created works in which women would partner men in the ways audiences were accustomed to seeing men partner women.
5. True or False: The dance style founded in the JDM is referred to as 'post-modern'?

Answer: True

Because it was a reaction to and against the 'modern' dance of Graham, Limon, and Cunningham, the JDM was termed 'post-modern'.
