Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Avenue Q' was a popular new musical to open on Broadway in 2003. What is unusual about the show?

Answer: Most of the characters are puppets

'Avenue Q' is inspired by 'Sesame Street', but offers life guidance on more adult topics than the TV show does. Song titles include 'Everyone's a Little Bit Racist' and 'What Do You Do With a BA in English?' (a question I've often asked myself). There is also (of course) a "word of the day" song. The word? Schadenfreude!
2. 'Anyone Can Whistle' was an early Stephen Sondheim musical which played for less than a week on Broadway. Which song was cut from the show, but recorded anyway, becoming one of Sondheim's most popular compositions?

Answer: There Won't Be Trumpets

'Anyone Can Whistle' was the second of Sondheim's shows to reach Broadway, and its failure could have been the end of his musical career. Luckily, his next three shows (six years later) were all either critical or financial successes, being 'Company', 'Follies' and 'A Little Night Music'.
3. 'Aspects of Love' is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's less successful shows. Which former James Bond was originally cast in the show?

Answer: Roger Moore

Roger Moore proved not to be up to the task in the end and was replaced.
4. 'Ain't Misbehavin' was a successful show compiling songs by which legendary musician?

Answer: Waller

This was an early example of a show built around songs not originally written for the theatre, in this case using the songs of Thomas "Fats" Waller. Shows of this kind became very popular at the turn of the 21st century, with examples such as 'Mamma Mia'/'Momma Mia' (Abba), 'The Boy From Oz' (Peter Allen), 'We Will Rock You' (Queen) and many more both on Broadway and the West End.
5. Which song was added to 'Annie Get Your Gun' many years after its first appearance in an attempt to mirror the success of 'You're Just in Love' from 'Call Me Madam'?

Answer: An Old Fashioned Wedding

'You're Just in Love' was a big smash for Ethel Merman, so when she was to recreate her role in 'Annie Get Your Gun', Irving Berlin tried to repeat the success with another contrapuntal duet. It's a good song, but not a patch on the number from 'Call Me Madam'.
6. Which actress first starred in 'The Act', with a score by Kander and Ebb?

Answer: Liza Minnelli

By the end of her run in the show, Minnelli ended up miming to her own recordings of the songs. Not exactly an audience pleaser!

The other three ladies mentioned have all created roles in Kander and Ebb musicals. Chita Rivera starred in 'Chicago', 'The Rink', 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' and 'The Visit'. Gwen Verdon also starred in 'Chicago'. Kander and Ebb also provided songs for Streisand's film 'Funny Lady', the sequel to 'Funny Girl'.
7. Speaking of Kander and Ebb... 'And the World Goes Round' was a compilation show of their music. The title comes from one of their songs, but from which film?

Answer: New York, New York

The song was originally sung by Liza Minnelli, who frequently worked with Kander and Ebb. She starred in the stage musicals 'Flora, the Red Menace', 'The Act' and 'The Rink' and played Sally Bowles in the film version of 'Cabaret'.
8. Which of these shows had a score by Rodgers and Hammerstein?

Answer: Allegro

'Allegro' was an experimental show with a Greek Chorus and stylised sets. Not a huge hit at the time, the show still remains popular.

Versions of the Aladdin story have been written by Cole Porter and Alan Menken (the latter with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice). 'Anything Goes' is another Cole Porter score and 'Annie' has songs by Charles Strouse.
9. In the Sondheim musical Assassins, who encourage Lee Harvey Oswald to shoot JFK?

Answer: Other presidential assassins

An odd musical that celebrated the people who assassinated (or tried to assassinate) American presidents, 'Assassins' is a typically uncommercial Sondheim show, nonetheless popular with his fans and the critics.
10. 'Anything Goes' is one of Broadway's most-revived shows. Over the years, many songs have been added to it from other scores by the same composer. Which of these songs is not in the original show?

Answer: Friendship

'Friendship' is actually from another Cole Porter score, 'DuBarry Was a Lady', which also introduced the song 'Well, Did You Evah?' which was famously sung by Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra in the film 'High Society'.
